First things first: I cheated. I played on this map (Rim, 100x50, 50 Planets) on Normal and Hard and quit when I saw that the AI would be no match. So.-..when starting my first game on Crazy I knew the general map layout. I knew I wanted to beeline for this yellow planet in the middle with Thuluns an capture (if possible) the planets up and down from this point as well. And so I did.
I also know where the (2) enemies must be: in the West as I didn't meet one in the east where one also sometimes starts.
So, my (still) tiny fleet sits there and waits patiently ...and sits...and waits... I have yet to see a single hostile Ship.
I mean - isn't this some "crazy" difficulty where the hostiles should be comming down on me as some avenging angel? Shouldn't they at least be exploring, looking for planets to colonize or trying to do some other evil things?
When I was playing on hard I went looking for the AI (I will likely find it just a few fields west of that middle planet again) and they had quite some ships (which were no match to mine anyway). So assume they also do have some ships now? But...where are those? And as the title says: what the hell are they doing?
This must be the first 4X space strategy game where the "enemy" is just leaving you alone. As this can't be the idea behind such a game (at a rather high difficulty) - I placed it here under "Bug reports". (I hope the attached pic works, wasn't able to attach it directly)

There are periods where the Xenos are quiet, and you won't see them for months. Then they start pouring out in their dozens and dozens. Stop complaining! You'll be doomed soon enough!

Just wait, and be happy that they have left you alone so far... It's only year 4, which is still crazy early, as far as the Xeno is concerned.

Alright then, I shall await their arrival patiently. Im just not used to get enough time to build up completly in such a game...

Before you wait too long for them to come to you, you might want to read this thread: lazy xenoThe bug(s) the thread starts out discussing have long since been fixed, but pay close attention to the posts starting this year.

Alright then, I shall await their arrival patiently. Im just not used to get enough time to build up completly in such a game... It carries by map and by ai and some randomness. If you play the same map!vs the same species of xeno many times you'll start to see patterns in where they expand and what stop points they have. But I recommend expanding while you can. If they get to you its because they took all the world's between you and their start. Do you really want them to be that big and developed?

Yes :-)
I don't play such games to win easily.
But in any way. I'm not talking about gamneplay so much here, I'm talking about "programming" (hence it's placed at the bugs-section). If I'm told the AIs (esp. considering the difficulty level) are intended to stick idly to their planets, not even exploring the space beyond - fine.
Just from my personal experience with such games I would expect the AI to - explore the space in order to know where it can settle (again -not a single AI ship ever passed that line since year 2) - outcolonize me at the high difficulties by a big margin. I may have given myself a slight advantage, but still there are 2 AIs against me - I hold more than 50% of the space. That leaves each of them at <25%. But of course, as the AI never probed the space it also couldn't make an attempt to colonize.
As for "But I recommend expanding while you can" Well I'm pretty sure I can't expand any further (to the west) - as the AI held all planets west of me at "hard" difficulty before year 4 started. So it should be there now as well. (Right now I'm colonizing all the empty planets in the east of course).
For now I just want to see if the AI ever comes to me, or if this could be just a major sandbox game ;-) If it eventually floods me me ships and takes a couple (or even all) colonies from me in a major swipe - great! As it is (and the numbers of planets I hold vs the ones the AIs can have) I believe I will have a MAJOR technological edge AND an Economy way above the AIs.
P.S. AE5.30 ...no enemy sighted ;-)

Meanwhile I'm at AE 7.27 - still AI didn't show up with a single ship. Tell you what - I don't think it will ever do unless I go looking for it. Which for me still looks like a bug, or at least a major flaw in its programming. I will wait a couple more years just to make sure...

Year 9 - no AI. I can't say that comes as a surprise.... I guess I will wait another year, just incase 10 is the magical year for Ai activity, then this gets slighty too boring. I just hope that the AI surprises me with like 500 waiting ships when I get there...

Try the 'Garden' map. Hopefully a little more to your taste, as when there are 6 xeno they all have to go somewhere - usually right at me

No question - there are way ways around this and maps where this will be less/no issue. For me the question is just if that is a bug in AI programming or intended behaviour. I'm curious what the devs got to say about this when they are back..

euphorion - you could post (or check) the screens detailing the xeno stats under Factions. That would give you some clue as to what they are up to.

Yes, I found that a while ago - and level and Xp has been increasing constantly. Currently: Xytox: 9 worlds, 64236 xp, lvl 25 Zenga: 9 worlds, 75042, lvl 27 They both had these 9 worlds each s ince at least 4-5 game years ( must have been around then when i first found those stats) Well, i will soon move, just scanned the space ahead - very little opposition there to be seen....

If this wasn't so incredibly surreal I would quit this game right now.
So...I advanced slowly towards a Xeno planet. Every ship that was to be seen immediately retreated. I parked my Ships 2-3 tiles from the planet and went to produce Invasion ships and got them there...another 15-20 turns passed.
At one point I thought "Now it starts" ...as the AI showed up with 4 ships at the boarder to the fog of war. Next turn they were gone again.
So here I am now, ready to invade...still not a single shot fired.
I assume the AI master plan will work out eventually: boring me to death ;-)
The one Xeno ship that can be seen was been made visible right before the Screenshot by remote scanning. Next turn that disappeared as well into the mist ...
Just hypothesizing now: Could it be that the AIs fighting heavily against each other, basically neutralizing each other shipwise? (still this wouldn't be an excuse for not even exploring the other direction with a cheap ship, but at least it's a theory...)

The AI will not physically attack each other, but they compete for resources, namely planets. They can effectively starve each other to the point where there are no worlds within their colonization ranges.
