Ok, it is time I start playing 4x since I have had it downloaded for a while now.
I have elite only, so only the Syndicates and Houses. Is there a map I should start on to get my feet wet. I am playing low difficulty for now. I like Thulun and Cadar so far because of their cp at start. Any tactics would be appreciated.

You should definitely start with the first map, the tutorial. It is no push over, its a full map -- it just has in-game explanation during the first set of turns.

I'll play the tutorial over again, see if I missed anything. Is it good to specialize planets? For example, low quality, high mineral go to Javat (if you play them) and focus on mines vs. Population.

Javat makes a great companion to any militaristic set of factions, as does De Valtos, but their income is dependent on the political climate. Tactics come down to the map selected, so feel free to let us know what you pick! I love the 100x100, 90 World map.

I have played, just been a while. I started the tutorial a while back as well, just stopped before xeno contact. ST gathered most of my time is all. Mines seem to be less affected by the politics. I have the basics down so far.

Cory... Andrew... love this game!!
That being said, help me understand ship building. I have only built the colony ship with lvl 3 starport. I don't understand the other classes. I also want a scout ship and a refuel tanker... I want to start up a navy and find the aliens.

I also want a scout ship and a refuel tanker... I want to start up a navy and find the aliens. The ship design system centers around Hull Types. You will gain additional Hull Types in the Research Tree. They are marked with a special ship icon. Once you have researched a Hull Type, you can create a new ship design. Some Hull Types include pre-generated ship designs that you can use right away. Others require a custom design. In the Ships menu, select the Designer. From there, select New Design. Then select a Hull Type. Once you have selected a Hull Type, you will enter the Ship designer which has 8 steps. Select a Visual and a Ship Level and then ssign ship stats for Ship and Crew. After that you will need to assign Weapons, Armor, Upgrades and finally Training. Training is available based on the Weapons and Upgrades on the ship. If you want to build a Refuel Tanker, you'll need to use the Carrier Hull Type and add the Refueling Bay Upgrade. Once that upgrade is installed, you can select a Training that will allow you to Refuel ships.

Ok, is it better to use the carriers or fighters... mixture? I know to spread it evenly as to not sway the political system too much and butthurt one of the factions lol. I know my preference is big battleships that can take damage. The messege conveyed to the aliens "Leave my quadrant", maybe with a small front of gunships. I also know I'll need an invasion ship later on.

I also know I'll need an invasion ship later on. A mixed force is the most effective. A line of Fighters, backed my Torpedo Cruisers and Carriers. Heavy ships supplement the Fighters, taking secondary attacks once the fighters have soaked counters. Use Fighters to soak damage which can be quickly repaired by Carriers. Refuel Heavies in Green space when possible, cheap and faster. Building a fleet of only one kind of ship is less effective than maximizing your output by blending the fleet design. Remember that XP can be as important as tech, so don't destruct ships that gain it.

More like a true navy. Specialized but working together in a fleet.

More like a true navy. Specialized but working together in a fleet. Yes. You'll want to avoid Ship death, as loosing high costs ships causes Faction distress and Morale loss. The Destruction of a Heavy Battlecruiser can be enough to trigger a Solar War if it leaves one Faction without a Heavy while the others are raging large ships. This is part of the balancing act for Steel Song's XP bonus -- if you exploit it too much, Steel Song will become overly powerful and use violence and assassins to impose it's will, trigger Spy and Trade Wars.

Damn song birds, they are better off as test subjects for the recovered torp tech lol. This game I am Thulun, Cadar, and DeValtos. I prefer not to use many mines and go the exchange route to push my economy; mines are expensive. I use some, but don't focus much on them.

If you go early Exchange builds, later you should switch over to Orbitals for your Minerals. Minerals are much more resistant to Politics than Trade Points.

The orbital mine is a freebie, no quality cost. Why not use it? My primes have some mines, bit only about 3 or 4 like the tutorial told me to when I did it. I have 3 more colony ships going out further to find some new yellow stars ... or just stars in general. I have nothing left near but mineral planets.
