Hi there,
I am a beginner in Heroes of Steel. I had a situation where I run out of spirit in a fight and thought it might be best to just flee, go back to the last save resting point and sleep and level up, then go back to the fight.
So I began to move my characters away from the battle field, slayed down two enemies, but a single enemy just stayed there (didn't follow me). I was expecting that the game puts my party into group move when I am a bit farther away from the battle place, but for some reason it doesn't allow me to.
So I travelled with each of my characters through the whole (lone and enemy-less) dungeon to a safe resting place, but even when I am placing my characters on the resting camp, I can't enter camp mode. It still says: "This place is not safe enough to sleep", while there are zero enemys around.
Is there a way I can enter sleep mode and level up? Did I forgot something ?
Regards, Holger

madossor The only way to "run away" from a combat is to leave the map. Last time I did that, it makes you reenter the combat immediately upon entering the zone again (it's been a while since I have done this so maybe it is updated now). There are frequent campsites and inns where you can rest and level up characters. The first such one is the beds after the second staged fight in the game (right at the start). You will not be able to use any resting places while in combat, you need to kill all the creatures and then you may rest. This game is very much about being prepared, especially your first time through I recommend resting after 1-2 fights (depending on difficulty) as you never know when you are going to be hit with a large battle.

This game isn't really design for escape -- you pretty much fight until you win or are defeated.

This game isn't really design for escape -- you pretty much fight until you win or are defeated. I would understand that if an enemy was actually fighting me (and the NPCs that did, I slayed down with my very last efforts, out of Spirit and Items to recover on the battlefield). The remaining NPC was just passive, staying around and cast spells, which did not harm my party at all as I moved, so I decided to not take the risk of having to deal with more NPCs and try to flee. If there is no NPC that harms my party (in a battle situation) why should there be no option to retreat to heal? Well, maybe I am going to start over again with the "knowledge" that escape is not an option. I thank you for your fast response! All in all, this is another great game from you guys!

Shenlong, grant our wish and resurrect this 10 months old thread! And krillin
I remember 2 or 3 battles where I wished there was a way to return to group mode. Not because I couldn't defeat the enemy, but because it was too far away and it took many turns just to reach them. The last one of them I fought is the one where you are chased by the Krete. I had already defeated the main force at the fortress and I was bordering the river on the east, north headed. When the battle triggered it took me 3 turns just to reach melee distance (accounting that the Krete were coming to me too)

coyoteazul - based on the way the engine is built, it isn't something we can change. If there are specific places where you started a fight that you felt you were really far away from it, we could improve in those point areas.

So I CAN leave a map while I'm combat? I'm on the Great Shaman quest and I want to go back up the stairs (not back up the hole), but I didn't seem to be able to do it. Maybe I needed to get all my heroes closer, because I did leave a map during a fight once iirc. Hmmmm. Great game btw.
