I think I might have missed a war or something while I was slaughtering De Valtos scum...did I? Yes, you did. You may notice some changes when you return to base. Chiefly, you'll be working for Javat now, as Thulun as you knew it is no more.

Excuse me? What're you talking about? I'm on Hydri-Thulon Prime, buddy. Everything's fine. Are you sure you didn't accidentally kill off someone else? To be honest, anyways, why would you kill thulun? We're not at war. This is more of a personal war between Javat and I:/ You brought this on yourselves, anyways. Clan Javat just seems to have a vendetta against me>

You don't see DV stepping on Rychart's mid-map corridor, do you? And you knew I was lying about Prime, as " No faction world shall change hands..." But I still got you to race back and check to be sure, thus ending your devastating blockade.

I was beaten by a space hive I was just peacefully blockading Ursae-Thulun and then suddenly a huge space hive came to me feeling hostile for the fact that it couldn't pass through without paying! Since it was 50x my level, I couldn't survive. I died quickly and quite at ease...

Ugh. I wish a Hive would try to kill me. All they've done so far is fleeeeeee...
Worst death yet was probably when I forgot half my guns were gone and kept on firing against something with twice as much firepower as I currently had...and no escape shuttle.
Other hilarious death, I escaped in a shuttle- only to get mowed down in said craptastic shuttle while clicking Urban on the nearest planet.

If you get lucky and encounter one while blockading, you will be sure to get a hostile one... If you get one that is such a huge level as I did though, you can just surrender,... For the record though, what happens when you surrender to a hostile space hive?

Well, a Hive is Alien, no? And Aliens just want all non-Aiens dead. I assume you get eaten?

No, space hive isn't necessarily an alien. It can be independent people trying to get better, lives as well.

What exactly is a space hive anyway? I mean, I know the ships that show up... but what *are* they? Borg-like collective minds? Zerg assimilations? Or just really large human ships?

ships from the exodus if I remember correctly. Think they're ones that were taken over by Narvs or xenos.

Ah, so corrupted/compromised hive ships from the original exodus?

One time I had a successful merchant captain, that had high stealth and a fast ship. I saw a Narvidian and, in my arrogance, thought I could torp it to death from long range. If I remember correctly, it took 5-7 turns for the Narv to get to mid range, and from there, I could not escape.

My last few captains on Hard difficulty who didn't die from my own stupidity (like forgetting to check embargoes before trading, refusing to surrender when the enemy is clearly far too powerful, etc.), died from Aliens/narvs popping up in the middle of nowhere with a ridiculously overpowered ship. Because of that, my current Hard difficulty captain started out with a strength-based warrior-heavy build. Nothing more satisfying than being able to board the interfering Alien/narv and actually win. Interestingly enough, many games ago (IIRC on demanding/challenging difficulty) I had an independent captain who was attacked by several Aliens and Hives in early game. At the time, he wasn't doing well -- he had decided to take the path of all-out anti-faction crime far too early, before he was fully ready to survive as an indy captain, and was strapped for cash for many years. He was barely making enough blockading an indy planet just to pay for his fuel. Somehow he managed against all odds to defeat the hives/aliens, and scrapping their ships got him over the financial troubles and he successfully became a blackheart for quite a few years. Unfortunately, when he reached mid levels an insanely-overpowered Alien (or was it a narv?) showed up at an inconvenient time, and that was that.
