I'm curious about what all we know about gaining reputation. I will share what I have seen, and hope others chime in.
The most obvious is gaining rep from doing jobs. You gain rep with the faction you are doing it for and lose some small amount with the faction you are working against. If you do not complete a job you lose rep with the faction you were working for.
Any time you get into combat you can lose rep. It appears you lose more if you kill someone, but can still lose if you just run away. I have not looked to see if you gain rep from others by killing one faction.
I have not yet done enough hacking to know how it affects reps. I have heard it can affect rep when you sell paydata. Does it affect rep when you steal it? When you sell it, do you gain any rep with the contact?
For both fighting and hacking can I get a confirmation on net gain or loss?
Are there any other methods of gaining or losing reputation?
I'm playing brutal and want high rep with everyone.
On a separate note, has anyone located the source of firewatch computers?

Hi man =) I can tell u that yes, ramming the matrix could be change ur rep, especially if u fail to hack it;for the fighting honestly i cant tell the same thing, because also i dont looked for it precisely, but probably not,if u kill a X faction member u dont gain rep with Y faction,by now,but i think this system will change with the politics/rumors add.. An advice...CK world is not static,so collect good rep with all the factions isnt a good idea...=) and its almost impossible, btw =) concentrate your actions with one-two factions, and blast the others...^^

Oh yeah. I assume that a combat job treats rep as a job and a fight without any added complications.
I don't understand why good rep with everyone would not be a good idea. Also, it is far from impossible. I have full rep bar (~65) with 4 of 10 factions. The other 6 are 0-20.
All I have done is short jobs. I ran and evaded until I had the stats to get out of any combat after it starts. Now I confront in hopes of V-chips, then run away.

Ok if u mean that yes,i tought a 50+ for all =) impossible cause advancing in the game u must choose which faction u prefer to raise rep and gain advantages,or merely have a low good rep with all...it isnt a good idea cause in ck world(more fluid than Star Traders) factions have allies and enemies..Working with corps??U will be hated by gangs..Working for LV?? Fennians can take your head..;-)

I'm planning on 65+ for all. I just have only gotten through 4 so far, still have 6 to go.
Kind of the point of this thread is, which actions have a net gain for rep? Jobs have a net gain. If you did one job at a time from each faction in a row, it appears that eventually you could get high rep with all factions. (Not the most efficient method!)
I. e. if you work for everyone enough, everyone will like you. I see no reason (that I have yet found) for this to be a bad thing.
You keep saying "not a good idea" and "impossible." What am I missing? Maybe I should clarify definitions. I consider a good rep to be a full rep bar, roughly >60 rep. I see no reason this is impossible, since I get more positive rep than negative rep running jobs. It just takes time. I don't know which "idea" you mean. I think the idea of having good rep with everyone is good. If it is impossible because faction rewards eventually have diminishing returns, that is a different story. But unless there are circumstances where jobs create a <=0 net rep, it is possible.

As we go the game will include more and more rules that discourage multiple alliances.
For example as soon as Rank, Trust, Rate and Alliance are available the characters will have to chose for most of them will be mutually exclusive, either across all Factions or across families of Factions.
I would definitely agree that it is ill advised to build strategies that depend on positive rep with all Factions because in a few weeks/months it will be invalidated by mechanics as we balance out the systems.
- buying / selling pay data good way to generate positive rep

Here cory well explained what i wanted to explain u ^^ also cause if u want to get a ladder experience(with Victor or Texas) u will grow low if u try to have the same rep with all the gangs/corps/security corps... Eg u got texas vchip,to have the pass for the bravestar gateway u must have a 150+ rep(or 180,i dont remember) with Bravestar...if u only get jobs by BS u'll grow fast...and as cory said, next releases will change the current system(and make it more realistic ^^) Follow me,if LV and Fennians have a faida,u can do a doublegame, but not for much time...As in real life...u can take jobs by one side and the other side( eg mafia and triad),but surely there will be the time u will be discovered and both mafia and triad will want your testicles...xD i think that cory will make changes in this logic...or not??

I'm inclined to aggree with cory and slide. Not just because cory designs the game, but it just plain makes sense. Sure you can be super "face" and try to play all sides but really it can't last forever and slide explains why just fine....enough anyway.

In particular the different alliances will have personalities.
For example, the Brave Star may not care which gangs you associate with, but they cannot stand anyone who is friendly with the Knight Horizon, Yakuza or Yakashima Corp.
As we build up this graph of relationship behaviors we will be working to ensure a rich web of connections between the Factions. Then on top of that we will introduce runners with Faction loyalties, changes in relative Faction power and Region take over / martial law effects. Oh joy, just wait till i have time to convert half finished Java code into testing working game

Wait, if Cory's doing this, who's doing ST? More importantly, who's doing the Elite version of TA?! Oh, right! Cory and... Cory!
Shouldn't Andrew be doing something other than painting? I thought he also codes? And screams (for the xeno-hit.wav and xeno-killed.wav)?

However, if, like me you have the goal to get a great rep with all factions before Cory makes this impossible, know that the higher your + or - rep, the harder it is to reverse. Thus the strategy that works is to concentrate on one faction, and get its rep high, and then take jobs in the second you want to get in good with, mostly against your first allies. If you get more than 3 negative bars with a faction, immediately take jobs for them to get yourself to neutral. Then continue with your second focused group. Then move to faction #3.
But it's just something to do ... nothing special happens.
