Title explains it all, you bunch of Song scum. Quadrant's facing a Water-Fuel shortage, and your only hope now is to Harvest WF from planetside, or steal it from other ships. For added hilarity, do it without relying on Luxury Rations.
Can you prove tough enough to call yourself a Cadari, or will you fail as miserably as a Song's cardboard box does at resisting our torps?

The first thing I do in almost every game is to sell off luxury rations. But that's only because I tend to keep my WF tank well-stocked... which could be a problem with this challenge.

Are we doing turns survived as our scores?

Turns survived? A good question. I think the winner should be the one who destroys the most Song ships before dying 😁

Here's my first (wimpy) attempt: a DV bounty hunter on normal difficulty (yeah I'm a wuss). Actually, based on my experience in this attempt, I think a higher difficulty actually makes it easier because there'd be more pirates to loot. Most of this playthrough was spent flying through space unassaulted (except by mutinous crew ). I only managed to encounter 3 pirates whom I looted. Completed 13/17 contracts. Experienced 22 mutinies. Only survived 4 years with 236 turns. Pretty wimpy attempt, I'll have to admit. But I did discover that one way to survive, besides having high strength/warrior/intimidate, was to do contracts: lots and lots of them. If you do enough of them you might just be able to raise morale (haha, raise... more like keep it from dropping precipitously fast) and earn enough money to bribe the crew to keep them from mutinying for just 1 more turn. Incidentally, I discovered a funny bug, don't know if this was reported before: I was flying the Picky Beggar, which comes with an Escape Shuttle. When I die from mutiny, I get a "Make a lucky escape" button, but pressing it returns me to the main menu. However, the captain remains playable from the Roster! So it's possible to keep resuming the game (not that it helps, since the crew will simply mutiny again after 1 turn, so you can't actually do anything interesting).

Made an Explorer with custom ship on Challenging. Immediately went 4 AU to a Javat world to Harvest. Clicked Wild, met Alien on first try, as first ship encountered. Sails got totally destroyed by torps. Got boarded and died. The end. Total turns: 9.

Total Turns + Difficulty + Profession is probably a good metric!

Just did another run. Cadar bounty hunter on Hard. As an additional challenge, I decided that no luxury rations will ever be bought, not just WF. So either I have to get WF/luxury rations from pirating, or harvesting, not from the exchange. But being a bounty hunter, harvesting isn't really a viable option, so it was piracy through and through. Although this captain started out as a Cadar bounty hunter, doing a bunch of random contracts eventually shifted the balance of reputation toward favoring Rychart above everyone else (@ Darth Cthoras ). By the time he was done, he had good standing with Rychart (trade permit / edict / rank 2 (but could have bought more, just didn't bother)) and was a wanted criminal with everyone else. Did pretty well, considering how little WF he actually found from pirating. He even earned the 100K credits award! And being hated by everyone was actually a plus, 'cos that meant landing operations = long stream of ships to loot. In particular, at one point he was trying to land on a Cadar planet and ending up killing a whole lineup of Cadar captains via boarding (which he thoroughly enjoyed, being a turncoat and everything). Later on, while filling contracts in red space, he died due to hull collapse during a battle in red space that went wrong. Final stats: 765 turns, $104,945 credits, Hard difficulty, lvl 7 master pilot, died in 71.37AE. Total mutinies: 17, owned 4 ships (basically when the ship was too damaged I just hijack another one). Took 30 contracts, finished 25, failed 3, expired 1 (on the way to fill the rest when hull collapsed). Won 61 battles, lost 1.

The real trouble I see with this sort of challenge is how few enemies even carry WF or rations, and of those that do, they typically have just a few. I can never rely on pirating to restock either one. 😭

Hmm...
Captain WF-SHORTAGE #1 is currently trundling along on basic difficulty while I get back into the game. It's now dark outside so it's probably time to crank it up a few notches for #2

Yeah, looting is really unsustainable except at low difficulty levels when your W-F usage is low as well. Darth Cthoras, you win the award for shortest-lived captain ever! (+1 Karma for you)

(+1 Karma for you) Actually, my shortest lived Captain died on turn 3, en route to finish starting quest. To an Alien. Siiiigh... This has happened to me before too!! One of the reasons I decided to dedicate several captains to Alien-hunting. Incidentally, an ongoing Explorer captain on Hard that I'm currently playing started off encountering a Xrangg Alien at 57.28AE. That's like within the first year of his career! (And him being a non-combat explorer too.) Fortunately, it was only a lvl.1 Alien ship, but still... My captain was forced into a boarding battle (it was board or be boarded -- couldn't escape) and only barely managed to finish off the Alien captain before things turned really ugly. They outnumbered my crew 80 : 45, and was 69 : 37 by the time the battle was done -- the trend was not promising, as you can see my crew was dying faster than I could kill the Alien crew. It was a good thing this wasn't a captainless terror AI...
