Oooh, good idea resistor. I always thought it was the galactic equivalent of sunspots messing up radio tranmissions. Something happened to all the Wormholes. New Weird Science. Non-local (quadrant wide) Transportation and Communcation just couldn't happen for a while. The Templar leadership was either just isolated and marginalised, or perhaps even assasinated while vulnerable .... A new dark age begins until communication is restored.

I for one am very curoious about The Event. To those who don't know, "The Event" was a mysterious... event. When The Event happened in the STRPG quadrant, the Templars took up defensive positions around the quadrant, mostly abandoning the task of keeping the factions in line. The ST calendar is based off The Event (A.E. means After Event). Since ST4X and ST2 quadrants also use it for their calendar, that means it must have simultaneously happened in all quadrants. A powerful Narvidian FTL signal, perhaps? AE stands for After Exodus. 50 AE is 50 years after the end of the Exodus and the settlement of the Farfallen Rim.

So the event was the exodus? I thought these were 2 different things, separated by a whole lot of time? oh so much fun to get some of this cleared up ....

According to a Cory Trese quote it's After Event, not After Exodus. Cory Trese I always wondered how time was calculated in game. By this I mean "What the hell means 'XXX.XXAE' ?". I'd like to understands what the date means ; years ? months ? days ? YEARS.WEEKS AE (After Event) Furthermore, there is one planet called Kingott Camp in between Cadar Prime and Javat Mining (or maybe it was Kaflange Outpost, I often get those 2 confused). In this planet's description, it says that its infrastructure is crumbling from centuries of neglect. If A.E. means After Exodus, how could it be crumbling from centuries of neglect if you look at it at 60 A.E.?

I think this is intended as a reference to the hive ship's crumbling and ancient infrastructure. A lot of ST RPG history is lost and distorted Some of those things were written a long time ago, and we weren't always 100% careful with details in the early days

Or another event? Like the Templar Fleet forming it's defensive perimeter?

I wonder what role the Hunna will play in ST2, considering they were listed as a threat alongside the Xenos and Narvs. Perhaps they'll attack anything with a faction flag? Their motives are understandable, and I'll almost feel bad slaughtering them in the glorious name of Steel Song Clan.

AE is intended to be the date since the founding of the Quadrant. Star Traders RPG takes place about 50 years after the founding of that Quadrant. If you've played ST 4X, you know that mostly after 50 years you've either got 40 planets or your empire has been reduced to wild zones and dead worlds by nasty, nasty Xeno.

Okay, I'm a few months late to the topic, but I just finished reading the draft. I would like to commend Cory & Andrew for fleshing the descriptions for the individual Factions. Prior to this, a few Factions (especially the newer ones) were little more than a flag in my mind. Now they feel a bit more like distinct peoples with histories. Here are a bunch of question that could spur on further writing when you guys feel like taking a break from coding. Topic 1: A Grav must suspend Faction citizenship to join your ship crew. If they are no longer a citizen, why do they still have a Faction flag associated with them? Would they not be Independent? Are they free to rejoin their original Faction after a tenure in space? If yes, would they retain their original position/caste within the Faction hierarchy? Is it different if they were deserters vs. being fired? Topic 2: In STRPG, what happens to ship crew who desert after Entertain? Do they just become hobos hanging out in the spice district, or eventually rejoin society? What about deserters in ST2? Topic 3: Are ship crew considered Spacers? Topic 4: Since Independents don't follow Faction societal structures, do Indies differentiate/discriminate between Spacers and Gravs? I assume everything varies a lot depending the planet's own history/rules. Topic 5: Refined spice = processed spores, or processed crystals? Is the refined spice still alive, or it's an isolated biological/chemical compound? How does it interact with humans? Why can't it be chemically synthesized or vat grown? Topic 6: Are Combat Medics = Gestalt, and Doctors = Chasein? If both groups maintain an extremely high degree of secrecy & tradition, why can Officers learn it, while on a ship? Or are the on-board CMs & Docs just like the community college equivalent? Topic 7: I'm interesting in knowing more about what the Galactic War is and when it happened in relation to the other significant historical events. We could really use a visual ST Timeline. Okay, that's it for now. These are just my musings. No need to actually answer these if you don't have the time. Cheers~

1 & 2. Suspend is to temporarily put a hold on something. They have a flag by their name because this is their raising, personal history, prejudices, and it speaks volume about them as a person. A spacer who leaves an appointment on a ship or is dismissed is either going indie or will return to their original Faction. Consider that deserters are not saying that they don't want to be a spacer anymore, just that they don't want to be a spacer on your crappy ship. They are most likely joining another Captain in the Spice Hall, at least as a way to get home. This is also shown in the game, as a crew member is much more likely to abandon if their morale is low on a world that matches their Faction, less likely on an indie world, and even more less likely on another faction world.
3. Yes, all crew are spacers.
4. Everyone recognizes the difference between spacer and grav / grounder. Indies in general have a less regimented society, so the terms are more fluid.
5. Processed crystal.
6. No, neither your Doctor nor Combat Medic characters are Gestalt or Chasein. These are secretive, limited societies of highly trained individuals and are almost exclusively grounders. Their loyalty is to their order, not to a Star Trader Captain. There are tons of other doctor and combat medic disciplines, but these are the two very specialized, very expensive, very successful orders of note. Your CMs and Doctors came out of the medical academies, most likely.
7. A visual timeline will be included in the lore book.

I have some lore questions
1) Can gravs extend their lifespan by keeping a void engine active inside their homes?
2) What happens to a Syndicate citizen if they are not part of a cohort? Do they lose legal rights and privileges? Or does it simply close off economic and political doors?
3) Suppose a Clan prince legally adopted a child, and had no children by blood. Upon his death, would it be the adopted child or a blood relative (such as a cousin) who inherits the princedom?
