Wow that's some cool etymology. I didn't know that.
The universe idea is that the Captain and Crew are getting outside the Exchange. Unlicensed trade houses on the planet that cannot legally sell to Star Traders. They can sell to local merchants or sell to an operator that has Trade Papers.
Access to the Exchange is profitable but tightly controlled. Gravs that do not have the influence or money required to operate at the Exchange won't be able to sell to Star Traders unless they do so illegally.

So if a local Grav steals some luxury goods from the upscale manor of a well-connected Faction functionary, and needs to sell them quick, he has a problem but 'finding the Black Market' isn't it. But if you need some Advanced Medicines to save your life, and they are illegal on your world, finding the Black Market is something you need to do? The Parallel Market for Parallel Imports? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallel_importAre there Parellel Exports as well, or is this a one-way affair?

The locals don't have any problems, probably, finding a single dose or schedule for advanced medicines. They pay for it in Faction chits and they have no issues with local trade laws, since they're Faction citizens.
However, the Captain is trying to buy 40 metric tonnes of restricted industrial output. He or she needs to make a payment and take delivery of the goods, at the starport, into the cargo hold.
That's an entirely different bag of tricks, and requires a different source and strategy.

Parallel Imports and Parallel Exports are looking better, then.
There are some goods, on any world, that are strictly illegal to traffic in, period. There are other goods which are legal, but only to accepted traders with the proper permits. If you want to traffic in illegal goods, or don't have a permit, then this thing is what you are looking for, correct? What if you just hate paying tarrifs and other taxes? Can you get a good cheaper outside of the legal Exchange?

Was a Black Market equivalent ever mentioned in any of the ST novels? If so, how were they referred to there?

If we are going to make up, or recycle some words for the ST world, I like Grey Area.

I know exchange got ruled out early but... Thinking in terms of the ST verse and dealing with restricted/potentially illegal goods how about Spice Exchange. Logic for this is that Spice is more or less a universal item yet frequently restricted by law and permits. Going into etymology, similar to Black Cows being at the root of Blackmarket spice would be the foundation for any Criminal/illegal/quasi legal trade in the ST verse. Spice Exchange has a better ring to it than Spice Market and allows for a bit of double speak to keep the local law enforcement less suspecious. Oh no officer I meant I wanted directions to the Spice Halls for my Crew and where the Local Exchange office was for that cargo of Bio Waste I'm delivering. Sorry been a hectic day since landing.
