In the case of discovering things (traits, rumors, etc) it is not stacked and rolled individually.
When effecting a pre-existing number (rewards from explore, profit from salvage), adding 3 x 10% is equivalent to adding +30%. So it "stacks"

What if we gave captain's traits that gave them bonus XP for certain activities. For example, an Explorer captain could get a trait that doubles all XP gained from exploration results
I have Déjà vu about this suggestion. Sorry if this has already been suggested somewhere before.

I really like resistor's idea as well. I currently use Spy captain regardless of what I intend to do in the end (usually a combination of many things) because of the speedier XP gain, since I usually put EXP at priority E during creation.
Creating separate XP-related captain traits tied to specific activities would be a great way to balance this. Patrol/Blockade/Spy operations for MO/Pirate/Spy, bonus XP from crew combat for BH/Zealot, big trade for Merchant, Black Market access for Smuggler.

I'm not sure I agree about BH getting bonus XP from CC. CC is already good for levelling, and it seems like it would discourage non-CC BH builds. I think a better XP trait for would BH would be them getting a large XP bonus for completing missions that require an Edict. As for Zealots, I think they should get a good CC trait to differentiate them from MOs. (The Jobs are so similar, I think it would be best to give them very different traits.) Here's a couple more ideas: when XP is gained in CC, each member of the crew that wasn't in the battle gets 30% of the value of the XP; when victorious in CC % chance to gain random +1 skill bonus from Command, Evade, Intimidate, or Blade skills.

Now that I think about it, these are really bad ideas for Zealot traits. It encourages extra grinding with unnecessary repeating boarding.
