Technically even within steampunk you could create rail/coil/gauss weapons - they'd just be ridiculously enormous and just not worth the effort.
One of my favorite games has always been Arcanum, so i have to side with the steam punk. Its a less used genre (and if you ignore bioshock*) hasn't seen a decent use in quite some time.
*Note: I'm not a fan of Bioshock, i preferred its older brother known as System. Pretty Bio may have been, but that's not what makes a game.

now that I have a PS3 again I really want Deus Ex Human Revolution. the new one.
I also saw the video review for The Syndicate (surprisingly wow!)
I do know the next Bioshock is supposed to be heavily Steampunked (moreso than previous iterations???)
I love steam punk too, don't get me wrong...Victorian fashion is still gothically enticing and sexy.

Yeah, Infinite looks to roll backwards a bit from the pseudo-cyber Bio levels of steam ranks of punkdom. It looks promising, but i still don't hold out hope that it'll be as epic as the old ones for the same reason the new XCom wont live up to its grandfather.

Well since I have to pick a side,ill join steampunk. I loved playing the tabletop wargame warmachine for years, loved arcanum and the bioshock games as well. ;D
