One of the nice things about SF military fiction is that if your decisions about how things work, as long as it's believable that it would work, are right. That said, David Drake and David Weber do it well. Another good example is the Old Man's War series by John Scalzi, Joe Haldeman's Forever War series ....

Man, way better turnout so far in this thread than I expected. Now I need to post it on my forum!

Well my name in a game tends to reflect the type of character I'm playing.I find it difficult to stare at angel something or other if I'm playing an evil character.depends on my given mood at the moment.

Most of my captains are cartoon characters. Captain Optimus Prime on Demanding difficulty is trying to decide on which of my childhood idols is fit for launching at the Hard level.

As for captain names, I normally feel overwhelmed by the pressure to come with a really awesome name for a captain that may live a very short life. So I go for really plain names Tom, Jim, Jake, Howard. I also never rename ships unless they've actually delivered and dine something epic. My ship from my latest post in the Captain's Log became the Bolllish Doomcruiser.

I started ST after it came out (free) but before Elite was released. I was trying to thing of a good name for a capt of a ship, and suddenly thought of Capt Nemo and the Nautilus; from Jules Vern's 20,000 leagues under the sea.
So No it has nothing to do with a fish from a disney movie... Lol

Disney also made a movie of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, if I recall correctly.

John Robinson is probably pretty obvious to some. Swiss family Robinson in space, lost on the way to explore Alpha Centuri. Show is still in reruns on saturdays, I record it on my dvr. Not a high tech show, but have always enjoyed the characters and plots that are imaginary jump off points. Oldie but goody.

Been using for ages. Was one of my characters from Baldur's Gate. Unique enough to use for many websites, unfortunately already taken for some social media sites... :-P

Mine is rather simple. First and second initial, and first 4 letters of my last name. In the mid to late 90's got involved in a poker site, playing in the free rooms mostly and needed a name. Use it pretty much everywhere I don't have to use my whole name.
