After reading the help manual twice. My very first game on basic difficulty. I ended up stranded on a planet with no money to buy fuel, or trade goods wishing the crew had mutinied, and killed me. This was in no small part to my not understanding how to navigate. So here is what I learned from my mistakes.
All sector coordinates are relative to (0,0) which is one sector up and on sector to the left of the starting default planet you land on, De Valtos Prime.
* I use a Kindle Fire 8.9 HD to play so this post will consist primarily user notes about regular game screens with a few tips for Kindle users.
Remember all coordinates are in (x,y) format relative to (0,0).
Negative values for x contained in a (-x,y) coordinate are to the left, or west of (0,0). Positive values for x in a (+x,y) coordinate are to the right of (0,0) or east.
Negative values for y contained in a (x,-y) coordinate are above (0,0) or north. Positive values for y in a (x, +y) coordinate are below (0,0) or south.
For example if you were traveling to complete a contract at coordinates (10,-5). You need to move 10 sectors to the right of (0,0) coordinate on the x axis (east). Then 5 sectors up (north) on the y axis.
To display the Quadrant Star Chart, tap the Status button in the urban center. Now tap the Cargo buttion, now tap the Map button to display the Star Chart.
You can slide you finger to move around the chart. This is helpful when looking for a contract or other location. Then Ta[
e Center button to return to your shp view.
Notice how some sectors contain colors. To know which faction controls these sectors, if you are using a Kindle go down to the Home bar at the bottom of the screen and tap the Page icon. This will display 3 options, tap the Legend to see who controls the color sectors. Sectors that contain single red dots without color are not under faction control they represent deep space sectors.
This is very important because traveling in deep space spends allot of water fuel and exposes your ship and crew to damage. If your solar sails get damaged in transit it will stack with the deep space fuel penalty. You risk not making it to a safe urban area for repairs and refueling. Sectors containg solid colors are considered regular shipping lanes. If your ship is in peak condition you can travel long distances with very little fuel consumption and less risk to damage of ship and crew. Higher pilot ability helps even more.
So when you are navigating to a contract located in deep space or a wild planet you want to explore. Get as close as you can using color sectors before entering deep space (red dot sectors). If you have taken damage or running low on fuel in deep space away from from faction sectors. Look for independant planets with urban zones to refuel and repair. A good tip for explorers who are always losing crew on surface expedtions is to go to the indie spice bar to recruit to normal ship's complement. Note; If you selLallot of goods at the exchange before going to the spice bar, more volunteers are likely to be available. Who wouldn't want to travel with a rich captain right? ("That's right lads sign the articles, see the worlds and make a pile of credits, easy money my boyos")
When reading the help guide there is also an online PC version that I found the bigger fonts and navigation a little easier.
Ok that's the end of my very first posting. Making progress at basic deficuly setting. I've read almost all the threads on Star Trader. There are some really great contributor. and helpful to new members. So I figured I should attempt helping out like you guys did for me. As you can see my spelling isn't that great without an online dictionary.
Cory, Thanks is a small word for all the hard work you are doing. 5 Star game, I will add my review to Amazon as soon as I can.
Just in case your wondering, My avitar is from the "Lost in Space" late sixties, early seventies T.V. show.
