Hail there fellow sailors!
So you've just started playing Age of Pirates and want some general tips on making money. Well, there is a lot of money to be made simply trading between ports. I've never really tried playing the merchant game in ST, but in AoP it is lucrative and easy. I'm building up this thread as a way for people to share general tips on what ports take what, where the good deals can be had, and how one could go about lining their pockets with silver in a more diplomatic way then simply sinking any and all ships you come across.
So to start, a basic run down of the ports and what kind of goods they will be looking for. For the record I'd like to say that a lot of this information is simply lifted from the Nathaniel Sveet story line, which is a very good way to build up a good working knowledge of the game's economy and how to exploit..... I mean work with it!
Basically we want to work on the notion that trading between kinds or port is the way to do things. You can plot out a trade route quite easily using a notepad and the sector map. When plotting out a trade route, keep these simple rules in mind;
If I put an item in red then it is an in-demand item, and the port will buy from you at a high price. If in blue then it is a produced item, ports will sell to you very cheaply.
Agricultural districts produce raw material cheaply and plentifully as a general rule. That means things like hemp, timber and molasses are, as a general rule, cheap here. You'll want to bring things like canvas and rum because the prices are higher.
Naval forts are dirty little forts in strategically significant areas. They are not, however, comfortable. As such prices for things like rum and shot and powder tend to be high.
Wealthy population centers are just what they sound like, the big city. The people here will be producing refined goods and wanting luxury items. As such, timber, hemp, molasses, spices and journals are in demand. You can also pick up shot and powder, rum and canvas quite cheap at the market.
I'll add more as I get to be more familiar with the economy of the game. I've also been working on a large spreadsheet of average prices to be found in the game, so when that is further along I'll post a link to it here for people to reference.
Also, as with all of my threads, if you have comments, corrections, suggestions, or just general banter please feel free to post it here. I'd be happy to include you in the OP and appreciate any comments you guys might have.

Posted this later in the thread, thought it might be helpful to past here. Here is a simple chart to reference. As with anything I post, it's just some general information and subject to change. If you lose money, sorry!
