hlo - Good point, but would that be as effective as gunning due to skill investment? I think you'd need to be able to close with enemies, and if you ran up against a light and small enemy you might have a hard time closing to boarding range.

Shooting it out maybe the way when I get the skills high enough. But then I find the other ships are just as good in dodging the shots and they try to close in as well. Therefore I better get ready for a sword fight with a large crew. Both of us are probably right in our own way as we both find way to survive and make money.

Honestly I just put everything in Negotiation/Charm and Navigation/Sailing with maybe ten pts in fencing and whatnot. With good sailing and a pirate sloop I ripped out of the hands of a dead buccaneer, I hardly ever get into combat, and if I board you its because I really needed rations. I'm on Normal though, so use as you will.

...if I board you its because I really needed rations... Tried using this line on my Partner. I told her it came from a guy with rank, called Genious. Didn't make the slightest bit of difference.

I have been making a few pages of my notebook dedicated to this game because lots of the game mechanics are hard to understand when it comes to haggling. I found a few things that I'm not 100% sure about but I will give it a go. Understanding the base prices I was given I would say that trading hubs such as pirate and national give slightly increased prices on all goods up to what seems to be 200%. I think the differences between different types of trading hubs is the economy strength and the security of the port. For example, a pirate trading hub would be dangerous while a national trading hub would offer more protection from pirates when in the vicinity. The original post should be edited to include trading hubs and say that you can sell anything but not bother with buying.

And I think that in a pirate trading hub, all commodities are able to be sold as well.

I can tell you two stories how I tried to make silver taking advantage of rumors. One success, one failure.
1.
I heard a rumor about shortage of Timber in Kinloch Ramoch [1, 1]. Fortunately there is an Agricultural District in the neighborhood - Glencoe. I bought 60 units of Timber in Glencoe for 0s 66c each and sold them for 39s 1c each in Kinloch Ramoch! I earned about 2300s in a couple of days - not bad, huh?
2.
I heard rumors about shortage of Silks in Kinlochleven [1, 1] and surplus of Silks in Coldwynne [2, 2]. Sounds like an opportunity to make a good deal. I bought some Ship Rations, and after long journey I eventually dropped an anchor at Coldwynne. However it turned out that they had only 5 units of Silks there... Anyway I bought these 5 units of Silks and returned to Kinlochleven. But there were no shortage anymore and they didn't want to buy Silks at all... Should I mention my ship needed costly repairs after that journey and crew consumed incredible amounts of Ship Rations?

Sorry about that, jamesburke, I must have blanked it. Wealthy population centers tend to offer a good price for spice!

Yes, where is the best place to unload spices and silks, not to mention what is best to buy/sell at pirate hubs.

I noticed that doing the agro pop center navy route is pretty profitable but i'm playing the story so it might be different in sandbox
