Tonight, I had accumulated about 300K and I was shopping around for a new ship--I was leaning toward a Wolf Vector, but having trouble finding one. Suddenly, I'm jumped by a pirate who does an enormous about of damage to my poor little Tempus Fugit, and destroys the hull on the first or second shot. No problem--I have the Escape Shuttle (something I had to create a Bounty Hunter character for the sole purpose of unlocking), and I then putter around the Quadrant looking for a new ship.
Eventually, a pirate jumps from Steel Song Clan me. I escape. Another pirate from Steel Song immediately jumps me, and I figure hey, I can't escape (the Escape Shuttle is a sad ship to begin with, and it's already been damaged in the first fight), there's no Warrant on me, and I'm not carrying anything except a few units of Water-fuel, so I'd best just surrender.
I surrender, and I'm hit with the Warrant toast, and then informed that I'm dead! It doesn't actually say why I'm dead, but I'm guessing it was because of the Warrant--but the Warrant didn't exist when the pirate ship attacked me! It's bad enough that merely encountering a pirate (let alone being attacked) by a pirate reduces your reputation with his Faction, but it's absolutely absurd that the attack itself could push you over into Warrant status, after you surrender.
A final irony: I spent the game trying to stay on at least neutral terms with all six Factions. What blew that was the Water-fuel Tank bug: I was short of fuel and had to fill up at a planet belonging to De Vartos. No biggie, since the reputation hit for $2,500 of Water-fuel is minimal. Or at least, it would have been, if not for the stupid Tank bug, because I had to sell one unit of my real cargo and then buy one unit of Water-fuel 25 times, each time violating the Steel Song Embargo, so that my rep with that Faction went form like -7 to like -59 in an instant. If not for that, the pirate likely never would have attacked me.

I love line "absolutely absurd" =)
I don't fully follow this post, it sounds like you died from Health Loss due to many narrow escapes. What was the Captain's health before the surrender?

I think my health was 10 (I had plenty of cash and hadn't been in such a hurry that I didn't stop to heal, and I don't recall losing health in the previous fight) , and I don't think the captain took a hit in that combat--and I died after a Surrender (I have seen a death after a Surrender when my Health was 1, and I'm not sure I understand how that happened, but this was different). I assumed I was executed, but now that you mention it, there's a specific screen for execution, isn't there? I have no idea what happened.

MTKnife -- WOW you are describing something VERRRY strange with the Water-Tank. I have NEVER needed to buy fuel one unit at a time. Why?

That's happened to me, too. You can't buy more water than you have free space in the hold, so if you've got a 50 hold and a 25 water tank, but you're carrying 49 metal, you've got to refuel one ton of water at a time. I'm guessing the code takes the water out of the hold and puts it in the tank after you leave the trading screen.

You can never "fill up" on fuel in one purchase if you're got a Water-fuel Tank, but you have to make multiple purchases--the more other stuff you've got in your hold, the more purchases you have to make, and if you have 0 remaining capacity in the hold (but open space in the tank), you can't load fuel at all. In this case, there was a shortage somewhere (Weapons, I think), and I had the hold stuffed to the gills with the shortage good (all of which was later stolen by a dirty pirate, but that's another story).

The bug I have identified is related to looting and purchases near full cargo. However, the work around seems to be (as identified by *many* e-mails from players) selling a single unit of non-water cargo and then purchasing 25 units of Water-Fuel in a single transaction, then re-purchasing the unit of non-fuel cargo.

Nope, that doesn't work--I always buy the Tank as soon as it's available, and I have never seen it work that way, in either looting or the Exchange. Yes, you can make things work by selling a single good, but you can't then load all 25 Water-fuel at once; rather, you have to do it 25 times (I'm rarely so stuffed with cargo that things are this extreme, but I often have to make two or three purchases). In looting, it's easier, since you don't lose money "selling" and then "buying" back--you just unload all your water down to 25 (the size of the tank), load up everything else, and then load up the remaining water.

Should I try to get screenshots or something? I wonder if the process might work differently on different operations systems.

Do you use a physical keyboard with the trade slider?

The slider--I don't have a physical keyboard.

I am going to add a few UX fixes here:
- New Screen for Execution vs. Death - New "Why You Died" text on Death Screen (Health, Rads, etc)

I get the same Water Fuel bug as mtknife and oldalchemist, i.e. I have to buy/sell (or load/unload) in units of 1. Or, worse, sell 25 cargo, buy 25 Fuel, buy back 25 cargo. Actually, is that worse or is it the same? If it's the same financial loss, it's less of a pain in the b*tt to sell 25 items, rather than sell 1 item 25 times.
I guess if I cared about it that much, I would go to a cache to do the juggling for free.

Sounds like I need to go back to the laboratory for more testing -- because this water-fuel tank sounds like more trouble than it is worth.

Maybe replace the water-fuel tank upgrade with a water-fuel scoop/purifier that lets the ship collect free water when on Patrol, or when landed in a Wild Zone. Maybe 1-3 free units per week. Maybe a % of your Hold size. Only works if there is free Hold space available.
Patrol = risk of nasty encounters while doing strange maneuvers inside the rings of gas giants.
Wild = tricky because the only way to make time pass currently in a Wild Zone is to hit a button that incurs substantial risk. Maybe add a Gather Fuel button to Wild.
Or maybe add a Gather Fuel button to both screens, if you have this Upgrade.
