"Look, Cadar boy, I've got 200 weapons. You're out of weapons. You know that makes it hard to even think, right? You want these weapons but seriously, I have no idea how to fill out all this paperwork. See this shiny badge? Right. You have a week to get this crap off my ship and dump the credits into my account. I'll be at the spice hall."

You need a badass quartermaster officer with a forklift. Seriously, that would be a cool officer bonus to have. Quartermaster: increase in morale if spice, vudka, and luxury rations are on board; huge decrease in time lost to hold transfers and exchanges; based on his level, can pack more than maximum cargo onto the ship.
"We're storing water fuel in the record shielding pods instead of just plain water, we've replaced the crew's pillows with spice bags and their beds with crates of clothing. This alien artifact is a Klein Bottle and by attaching a circulator pump, I can keep a unit of Chemicals in extra-dimensional space. Also, don't use torp tubes three through nine, as they've been converted to crew beds until we rearm so that I can store Thulun salami in the unoccupied bunks."

I would so love to see a stat on just how many captains have been churned through your device. I know Cory's up to the tens of thousands.
For me, getting the rapid rank requires that luck thing again. Explorer in Javat, coming across a large amount of stuff in Tucanae-Javat Mining, then being able to sell it at Javat with a shortage in a particular restricted good. It got me the RP I needed quick enough to achieve the rapid rank awards in no time flat.
Of course, shortly after claiming the award, the captain was hulled by a ramming sortofa pirate. Gotta hate the rams.

I just managed to get it as a Bounty Hunter for Rychart flying the Picky Begger. I took a bunch of contracts, did lots of extra surveillance, and lots of extra killing and looting. In the end I just made the deadline (I doubt if I had two weeks to spare). I shudder to think what it will take to reach 9th rank. I wonder, based on my own experience and from what I've read, if it is even possible.

It extremely possible. I wouldn't make an unlock I couldn't do on Impossible difficulty.
I regularly (every release, if I can) unlock all the awards with each update. It is one of the ways that I make myself test stuff that I don't really like doing (Explorer to LVL 25 and 21 danger worlds, for example)

I guess I no longer need to wonder "if", just "how." Can every class unlock all the awards? In one game?

All in one game I am not sure. Some of them are direct opposites, especially the reputation ones, so that would be hard.
Getting to Rank 9 is really hard using Contracts. If you play a Military Officer (lucky Solar / Trade War) or an Explorer you should be able to get both the Credits and Reputation with one Faction rapidly.
Congested areas of space (Cadar / and Javat) are excellent Factions for this attempt.

well, its not so hard to obtain this award by Javat explorer. You can first try do 2-3 short cotracts to get more exp -> better explorer skill and look out in the same time to crew upgrades -> more crew = more stuff so this is a luck factor
second thing is dont try to 'overexplore' Javat Mining planet - you will lose your crew if you do that. good planet for second run is Bellix-Free II and Kalflange Outpost
and tip: when your ship is full of cargo - dont leave planet to sell it. just cache it and explore again to moment when they end. many times i saw that when you land on planet - there is a big risk that your first explore action will kill many of your crew. i dont know why it is happening but i saw that many times, so caching and exploring again will minimize this risk. also remember to cache water before you start explore first time - you will dont lose it when you will find many items
