I have been attempting to "rank up" rapidly, particularly to go after the Zealot character class. Gotta have a goal :-).
To get 6 ranks in < 5 years seems just implausible. The best idea I have seen has been to go out as a Javat Explorer, and head immediately to the Javat Mining planet, where there's a pretty rich planet to explore right nearby (Zat Ogotthara). That makes it easy to level up to rank 3 or 4.
But more than that doesn't turn out. It takes some time to do the exploring needful to fill up my ship with valuables, and the 3-ish runs that are needed to rank up to #6 take considerably more than 5 years.
Fighting doesn't look to be any better - that chews up time, and requires travel and repair time that'll blow out 5 years all too easily.
Maybe I'm barking up the wrong trail... But I see listed a Rapid Rank III, which requires getting to rank 9 in the same time, which seems Right Out There.

Javat Mining Camp is right on. Don't make any 'runs.' Just go from wild to orbit to urban to orbit to wild. The only time you need to go anywhere is to grab new crew. Also, make sure that you also blow all of your profits buying and reselling what's in the exchange for more rep. Also, a pile of records in the hold makes the exploration runs more profitable, so don't sell all the records right off.

Excellent, that worked like a charm, even without "buying extra rep" or holding records.
I'm gonna see how a Zealot turns out for the "surviving as hunted criminal for 22 years at Crazy level" thing; me wants more ships to choose from!
Thanks much!

I'm not crazy about Zealots, but good luck with the Dark Nemesis Award! Consider getting very rich and well armed before you start making enemies.

I strongly advocate the "four friends, and two hated enemies" theory myself. It was how I got the award done.
(and, realistically, expect to die, A LOT, working on this award.)
I'm more for Pirate than Zealot myself, but good luck!

Famous Explorer that everyone likes suddenly starts blockading the crap out of a few planets and then flits between friendly spice halls for 22 years...

Hmmm, I am trying this technique out, but I am getting nowhere near rank 6. I barely hit rank 2-3 before time runs out.
The best I have had so far is rank 4 on Demanding. I used a Javat Explorer with the Picky Beggar on the Tucanae-Javat Mining planet at -2,-5. I have tried with other ships, but had no better success.
I buy and sell the items at the exchange for the extra rep, and hold onto records for the bonus, but I just don't get anywhere near what I need.

Booyha! It actually finally just worked for me.
I created a new explorer, named Indiana Jones (I mean, who better?), and hit two major exploration jackpots in a row that filled up my 40 cargo space.
Using this method apparently won't work every time, so you just have to keep making new captains and trying again. It seems luck based if you can pull it off like this.

Are you buying Rank as soon as it becomes available? Are you spending excess cash on the rep-gaining items in the exchange and selling them back? You really ought to be able to get the rank awards just by milking the Javat Mining Camp as an explorer with a little bit of luck.
