Something has got to be done about heat. Seems like it's actually easier to just kill everyone and walk way, rather than escape.
When I chose to run from just three guys I got a heat increase of 17. Yet if I had have killed them, it would have been roughly 2 heat per kill.
Why should your heat rise so drasticly when you run away? Unless I'm missing the point.

Yeah heat needs a good looking at. As it stands it rises and falls with rather wonky results it feels like. I am sure there is a formula, but something is severely messing with it. Coffin Hotels don't always lower it, "relaxing" at a bar or eating doesn't appear to affect it (I try doing that before staying at a hotel nada) so I am not sure what I am missing either. I usually just go with the mentality "kill em all, let God sort them out." and when I drop I drop.
Having said that, some mention was made of "safehouses" someplace. I have yet to see this, but what a great idea if we were able to purchase a house on the map as a flop house for our knights where they can go to stay low. Maybe purchase rentals on various locations, and you have to pay the rent (or even Intimidate the landlord, or Negotiate) for your stay

Safehouse keys can be purchased from various property dealers, like "Vacations and More" in somewhere BraveStar territory near Downtown area. Use the key like using a scavenged data file and you get a hotel menu when clicking the safehouse entrance.

You can buy houses/condos/etc from Realtor. They act as hotels when you stay in them.

moody - thanks for staying after us on heat. Certainly, it is one system that needs to be balanced perfectly, and obviously this early in a BETA, we still have some way to go. We just fixed reputation loss on escaping combat, which is a good addition in my mind. I will talk to Cory about this one, but I am on the fence. If you just fled from a security team in the core of the city, it is likely that they have put out your description to other nearby teams and are dispatching high-flying surveillance drones to try to track you down. A security team might lose sight of you to try to kill you, but they aren't going to simply forget you are there. Consider it an open discussion =) Thoughts?

OK, given that explanation now I understand. In that case a thought strikes me, possibly use the stealth skill to either reduce the amount of heat you obtain from escaping. Or have stealth (as I can't think of any of the other skills logicly offsetting Heat, possibly Int or Athletics), cause your heat to reduce with a greater speed. Thoughts?

It would certainly add more value to stealth, which I currently nada in. I like to pick through my corpses, so I haven't seen a direct need for it. If it reduced heat or added to its reduction then it becomes valuable, AND makes sense from a lore standpoint.

Maybe the surveillance system found the hotel you were sleeping in,and got additional info from the hotel, but couldnt attack to your room because of the hotels high security ratings(and deal with the controlling megacorp that they can NOT under ANY circumstances kill paying customers) achieved from using a hotel with a big price tag.

Classic issue here -- the game needs to display more of the numbers. I have a to-do item on my list to "add heat, absolute heat, and building heat values to single empire status screen (flag button)"
Right now we're probably not all on the same page about who has what kind of heat, where it came from or what =)
I declare the legal defense "it is betaware"

I see you hiding behind your beta flag. It's cool, it really is voodo at this point. I just went from 200 to 800 by staying in a hotel. Must have been one heckuva rockstar night.
