athios, I play on Insane and impossible difficulties. Still, as far as I am concerned, I had to buy torps only once (except for when I am alien hunter, since alien ships mostly have no torps at all). I have managed to get my longest living captain to lv 80, then I just bought an alien hunter ship and 50 arties, which resulted in an instant alien encounter in the place with the rumor... An encounter that kind of killed me. I have wanted to try to have a run without tactics, but usually I have them at least on 30 to efficiently perform surveillance and gain xp easily. Having more stealth allows you to take on higher level enemies... Well, maybe the problem with your run is, you don't blast everything that moves. I attack all ships, allied or not, knowing that surveillance in spy wars will recover the reputation I lose crushing enemy ships. Also,if you have problems with torpedo rearm rolls, I would suggest raising your tactics. I will try to create a captain with 25-30 tactics and the rest would be stealth. Perhaps it helps too

Interesting strategy, poryg . My last Merchant captain died when I tried to hunt an alien at level 50, and I now realize he had too much pilot and tactics and should've had more stealth.

I've played a very successful Alien hunter with high pilot, moderate tactics, and almost no stealth. Well, it was a high strength/warrior build, which may not be as effective once Cory Trese 's strength/level patch gets pushed out. But yeah, trying to take on an Alien with a merchant captain is unwise. Alien hunting only works well for combat-based captains.

I have played a, so far, successful alien hunter with moderate pilot and tactics, compensation was found in huge crew number and huge ship. Also, I doubt that resistor thought that his stats was like a full merchant. But truth is, every outside point outside the battle stats is a trash Stat point, and if there are too many, they bring too much of a disadvantage.

For the fun of it, I want to build a ramming captain one day I will be one of those dirty pirates that just ram you to death when they are losing. It would be helpful to add xp to strength to have some boarding resistance...
