Seen the news that Japan is cracking down on child abuse material and aligning itself with the rest of the world. About time.

Still find Manga/Anime to be confusing and disturbing. I actually started studying the style, but have decided not to produce any artwork of that type.
I saw a Youtube Outcry against the UK government, debating on making possession of Manga/Anime material a criminal offense in UK, (2009), but could find no evidence from government sources, that any debate had been logged.

Cg I'm not sure about the UK, but there was a case where a man was arrested crossing the Canadian border on charges of possession of child pornography for having {WARNING GOOGLE THE FOLLOWING TERMS AT YOUR OWN RISK!} lolicon/shotocon hentai (a fringe manga style depicting underage (by Japanese standards, so Age < 13 girls/boys in erotic and/or pornographic situations). There was an outcry and debate in the U.S. community as loli/shotocon was not considered considered child pornography in the U.S. until 2003 before then it was considered obscene material, but not child pornography and there was the question posed by manga-ka (manga artists) of how would a court of law judge the age of fictional drawn characters if the age is not specified in the dialogue. There was a fear that this would be applied to chibi/moe characters where characters are above age, but depicted in a kind of squished child sized form to indicate cuteness (I personally don't like chibi/moe, but it does have a mainstream following in Japan and the U.S.)

*I am by no means condoning the above genre just providing some information. I know about the above case/issue because I know a professional manga-ka.

I like Anime/Manga where the characters are depicted realistically to the characters age be the overall style realistic or stylized drawing.

Re Japan. It's been a weird issue for them because of their historical age of consent. Basically it is legal to get married at 13, but illegal to be in pornography until 18. There has been a trend of support for increasing the age of consent, but they are still debating it.

It's a rather interesting problem. If in Japan 13 is the age of consent but you must 18 for other things. A friend and I were talking last night about the first anime he saw, it ended up being a more adult one, he pointed out it's hard sometimes to know what the age of the characters are because it's consider wrong to draw pubic hair. So they always seem like their way to young. One thing to remember is different cultures have different ways. What may seem wrong to one is ok in another. Unfortunately anime\manga has had some hardships along its way outside of Japan. We're told to respect each other but it can be hard when there are many differences in the cultural norms. I could go into a long rant here about the worlds problems in general because of cultural misunderstandings, but that might ruin the fun. So I'll ask this question, who else was crazy nuts for Princess Allura from Voltron. I was only 6 but had a huge crush on her

ntsheep re pubic hair I think that would mainly come up in hentai, unless its a hots-springs scene, which brings up another interesting culture thing. The amt of times I have had to explain to anime virgins that a bunch of naked girls bathing together does not mean they are lesbians and has nothing to do with hentai. Group bathing among friends at bath houses and hot-springs is a social norm there.

I had a crush on Sailor Mars. I love strong women with long hair that can kick ass.

My poor friend said he had got the movie from a mail order video club. He didn't know what it was really about until he watched it. He's never watched another one since lol. Think he felt too much like a pervert and gave up on anime. In terms of temper and being a way cool bad ass in battle, Sailor Mars was the best I can't really pick a favorite Sailor Scout. They all had something about them I liked.

Mars was my fav, but I thought Princess Serenity *spoiler alert* (Sailor Moon's true form) was incredibly pretty. Not my kinda gal when it comes to personality though.

It sounds like your poor friend was scarred for life by an unexpected hentai. Try to get him to watch a ghibli movie. Maybe that will start some healing.

Why do anime "tranforms" have to result in naked girls? Ok, main "details" are missing, but does this sort of anime, line up alongside western fantasy art, with warrior maiden, wearing very little?

Actually. I was reading something about the "backwardness" of Japanese animation, and that a lot of the work is very poor quality. Ie. Constantly predictable stories. Bad or no lip synching. Etc. I don't know, because I haven't watched any. I like the adult looking characters in Final Fantasy game intros etc, though.
