Even the the surplus your selling into shortage is separated by 10 years of storage. Filthy. Stinking. Rich. What's the most units anyone has ever sold into a single shortage episode? I feel like anytime I dump 80 or more, that I end the shortage. (I'm sure this varies over time and by difficulty and due to other factors.) I don't know if the following strategy works, but I use it when I am desperate for a big payout. 1) sell 30 units (staying under the end-the-shortage cap) 2) sell 30 units (staying under the end-the-shortage cap) 3) Max out my ship's capacity and dump 100+ (going all in and probably doubling the cap to end the shortage but capturing the shortage price). Does that actually work? It seems to, but it could just be my perception.

Absolute protection for Smugglers, enhanced for Explorers. I'll get the specifics and update the help file ASAP. In the meantime, does the Smuggler still need a suitably secure planet to gain absolute protection, or can he gain absolute protection anywhere? That would be a HUGE reason to play as a Smuggler.

@jadarki -- you're correct, that does match how I understand it working. The end of shortage has a lot to do with difficult, current game turn and the Economy Type/Resource Type (for example, a Shortage of Vudka on a Capital World takes more units to end) and Exchange Rating. It's a complex equation running from 5 units to 100.

It's funny, shortly after reading the older posts in this thread asking if trading routes are viable in Star Traders RPG, I came across exactly one of those. It was in the Northwest part of the map (free version) and where there's Thulun space with a planet (-6, -5), some Javat space to the East, and the Refuge Camp. (-9, -9)
The Thulun planet was finally out of a trade embargo with deValtos Syndicate (I had gotten pelted with embargos, so I was in uber-criminal standing with all of the Syndicates, but good standing with the Houses. I've been trying to fix this) and it has tons of cheap Crystal, Metal and Chemicals. I have a Mars Class ship with the Cargo Prow upgrade, so it can store a maximum of 66 tons. This ship also has a cool story behind it.
I was flying the default ship, the Vae Victus, before I acquired my new ship. I'm a Merchant, and I was trying to bank off of a shortage in red space. Whenever pirates are able to get close to me, I'm usually screwed. I was attacked by pirates. I tried to flee, of course. This ship I couldn't outrun, as it is a fast ship with quick Agility. So, I spam the "Board" and "Duel" buttons in a suicidal attempt to do something cool. I do something cool. I capture their ship.
I had 8 Records in my cargo hold, and it turns out they had an extra few, in addition to Crystals and Chemicals. I take their ship, which is a fast Mars Class, with 50 tons of default cargo capacity. I usually get whipped like cream, and I really wasn't expecting to go Jack Sparrow on their Ashton Kutchers and counterpirate them, getting a pretty good ship.
Back to the trade route, I take loads of 20 to 40 tons of Metals and Crystals from the Thulun (-6, -5) planet to the Refuge Camp (-9 -9). I make upward of 70k, repeating this, eventually switching to Chemicals. Since I'm a Merchant, I get a ton Trading Records.
The reason I'm out here is because I'm, as previously mentioned, a criminal to the Syndicates. My character, Alex Clare (lolz) is part of the deValtos Syndicate, also. I have -20 with deValtos, and -45 and worse with the other two. And I've been taking contracts against Independents from them to regain their trust.
But yeah, I just dinged the 200k mark. I had gotten 200k before, but then I got thrown in jail and half of my credits stolen each time. With my new ship and some Stealth training, at most a ship will get one lucky shot off me. That's it. I ain't scared o' nobody now.
Cory, I enjoy your game very much, have written a review on my blog, and given it 5 stars in the Play Store. I like games like the X series and Space Rangers, and this is such a great game with neat art, yet it has that cool humorous commentary on player actions, similar to the original RPG, D&D. This is a real, intelligent Roleplaying Space Trader, and it is one of the most played games on my phone, which is saying something. Thanks, Trese brothers, for creating such a deep, cool game, which still has a good interface for managing things quickly.

Possibly my quote of the day "go Jack Sparrow on their Ashton Kutchers and counterpirate them"
Great story -- ST RPG is full of "Too Close" moments so I think you've got a great character name.
Drop us a link to your blog, we'd love to share and syndicate everything and anything Star Traders related.

There's also a good trade between Valtos Marquiss [25,21] and Butakov Prime [25,24] I wrote about it here startradersrpg.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=tips&action=display&thread=3199
