DAMMIT! I was at a bookshop on Friday, and saw Neuromancer on a shelf and thought "I know that name, but I can't remember where". I walked past it because I didn't have much time, and now I wish I'd bought it. There are still bookshops? I mean, BooksAMillion gone, Borders, gone, Barnes and Noble almost gone, who else besides Amazon is out there? rabid

It was a small charity-run place my father and sister were playing music at (they had an event with that kind of stuff).

Many of my greatest book finds have come from resale and thrift stores. Ones near colleges and schools can get you some good tech, science, math, etc, books. Where I live live we have Goodwill stores, I've scored some good ones there.

Ok here are some of the book series I've been reading. They're Kindle ebooks that I read on my Android tablet, with a reader app, when I'm not playing TB games.
The Greatest Heights of Honour, (Just starting) the 5th book in the Aneka Jansen Series by Niall Teasdale. He may not be for everyone, but I like him. Steel Beneath the Skin is the 1st book in the series if you want to check it out. I love this series & highly recommend it.
The Pattern Ship by Tobias Roote (Just finished) the 1st book of a 4 book series called The Pattern Universe. The second book is now out called POD. I thought this was a very interesting book and enjoyed it a lot. I plan on reading the rest of the series, I recommend this series.
The Ruins of Mars Trilogy by Dylan James Quarles. The first two books are fantastic and I'm waiting for the third and final book to come out. Love this series too and highly recommend it also.

The first two books are fantastic and I'm waiting for the third and final book to come out. Love this series too and highly recommend it also. I've hovered around the Pattern Universe trilogy for a while. I'll give it a try. I chose Dark Space series and Scrapyard Ship series books first. I can't recommend either. Dark Space trilogy is a soap opera that works well for a TV series but not a book series. It is extremely cliche, but I admit I've only read the 1st book. Also, the manner the story develops strains my disbelieve to an extreme. The characters are too pure and perfect and the divergent transposition of story between distant points does not convince me BECAUSE the characters are to pure and perfect. I know I typed it twice. Scrapyard Ship (Scrapyard Ship series) is not great, but it isn't bad either. The 2nd book, Hab 12, completely bombed. The very first revelation of conflict, in that book, was so predictable and cliche I snorted at the obvious and stopped reading. It simply felt much too postured. I WILL try to finish both series to give them a deeper review, but ... frig.... I am not looking forward to it. I have a feeling of dread, as if I'm going to get bombed by bad prose or something. Now, a spaceship series I can say I liked is written by Christopher Nuttall, (I wonder if its a pseudonym?) 'Ark Royal'. The 1st book is very good. The 2nd book is still good, though suffers from mid-series problems. If you haven't read David Weber's Honor Harrington books, I recommend most (Not all) of them. It is a very long but fulfilling story. I enjoyed it quite a bit. rabid PS: Hmm, question, isn't Aneka Jensen that series about some lesbian futuristic character and her adventures?

I'm not sure if it's mentioned in the thread, but people really should consider checking out The Twenty Palaces series. It's written by Harry Connolly, and is best summed up as "a dark Dresden Files." Connolly has stated that, at least for the time being, he's done with the series. He might come back, but he's working on a fantasy series that he kickstarted called The Great Way. Yes, I backed it. I can't really say too much about The Great Way other then it seems really cool and might be something that HoS players could get into, but the Twenty Palaces books are superb. I'd be interested in hearing about what people thought about them, provided anyone has actually read them.

Named a few ST mos after her. They died. Horribly. Someone mentioned Mira Grant's Feed- great series, but beware the slow intro- its a bit like the latest Game of Thrones, it sets the stage but getting to the good part takes longer than it really should...

rabidbite Yes it is, that's why I said it may not be for everyone. He doesn't go overboard with that, and the story & characters in it are very well done I thought. But there are comments in the reviews about the sex in the book but I didn't have a problem with it. After the first two books it's only a background or back drop to the stories. I've seen the book Ark Royal on amazon but could decide if it was something I'd like or not. Have gotten other books instead, but I'll give it a try when I'm done with the book I'm reading now.

As in the author won't write more in it, but the series isn't complete at all. Am I reading the information wrong? What's your take on this? rabid

What's your take on this? rabid Eh, I have read all of them and it never really resolves, but the story is pretty good as is. There is a cliff hanger, but it ends in a way that answers all the current and pressing questions and leaves things open for a possible sequel. Connolly has said that Twenty Palaces was a lot of fun to write, but made him absolutely no money. He's said that he's done with it indefinitely, but not that he'll never, ever go back to it. I'd say to check out the first book in the series if the story sounds good, but go into it knowing there is a bit of a cliffhanger ending. However, the whole series is kind of built on the fact that we don't really know what is going on. We never really learn anything about the magic, the Hunters, or anything. Everything the reader gets is from the perspective of the main character, and he's basically floundering around too. The tone of the books makes it such that the ending doesn't really break from the general tone, we aren't supposed to know about everything.

Today I read an extremely unusual book about ... well ... a young adult being forced to become a Summoned Demon. I mean like, WHAT? Though I browsed a few scenes with excessive verbosity, the book is fun and rather innovative. Into the Abyss (Demons of Astlan) I recommend it. It is also interesting to note it is a completely indie book. rabid

egads, I can't keep up with y'all.
@rabid, don't do it! Don't read books that fill you with dread, life is too short and there are too many good books.
I've taken a break from the vorkosiverse to read the first book in the Artemis Fowl series. Fowl started my 15 year-old son reading for fun again. Prior to this, he really liked the Percy Jackson & the Olympians and the Hunger Games--I enjoyed most of the books in those series. My son seems to have a penchant for books with smart-ass, powerful teen protagonists. Any recommendations for something that might appeal to my son.

Excellent series and they're all out now too. I would recommend the rangers apprentice series. It's pretty long and a good read for a 15 year old. (That's when I started it).
