Hey rabidbite,
Hugh Howey does characterization really well, and Wool is definitely his breakout series. I'll give a quick little synopsis for those who don't know.
The world has ended. The book starts something like 200 years after humanity was forced into an underground silo that extends for 144 stories below ground. They never leave and, in fact, the only people who ever do leave are criminals or political exiles. They are given the duty of leaving the silo, cleaning the cameras which show the outside world, and then are free to go wherever they want. There is only one catch, the air is toxic and eats through the EVA suits in minutes.
I can't really go into much more without spoiling the story, but needless to say there are 9 books in the series and each are absolute nail-biters. By the end of the series you are exhausted, but content. The various threads of the plot, the twists and turns, and the final reveal are all... well I hesitate to say the word, but amazing.
If you decide to read any of Howey's books, go into them blind. That's the only way to read them.
Books 1-5 are the main story
Books 6-8 are a prequel of sorts
Book 9 brings the main story and the prequel together into the conclusion.
I'll say that I usually hate prequels or interruptions to the main plot. If you (or anyone) has read the Dark Tower, I dislike Book IV even though it brings a lot of Roland's character to the forefront. However, the prequel of books 6-8 is done very well, and doesn't feel like an interruption so much as a part of the story.
*edit*
Also, another recommendation for everyone out there. The Martian. Go get it.
