I don't know what kind of fights you are fighting but when the surprise round goes off Kyera is 3 steps back from Selen and has no movement talents; can't see her blasting off too many banishments on the surprise round. Also, everything spawns with archers peppered throughout. Running your entire team in to feed Selen 1-2 kills is going to get squishies targeted by archers and killed. Even running Selen in and not getting the kill risks her big time for a counter attack (granted that risk is less with a tank Selen). At best, I can see about 20% of encounters where you win stealth to have a chance at feeding her a kill on the opening round without too much reprisal. Given that you can't even get this talent till episode 2 and that it only works on battles where you can surprise (so no bonus on scripted fights or chain fights) I feel one would need to really focus on this talent to make it work. The fruits of that effort would be when they have built a solid damage base and could more consistently get those first round kills, allowing it to ramp to awesome proportions. Maybe a top end would be called for but I would want it to be something ridiculous like +300 so that all that work you did to build it would make you drool over those sweet sweet crits.

Depends on the layout of the area, party level, spawn points, how much +mp gear you have etc.
Kyera with 3mp and of course 6 range is very reasonable, plus as many as 3 more ap for moving if necessary to fire off a first round banishment. That's basically up to 12 range first round banishment.
+300 is 50% higher than ferocity 10... Seems a bit much to give a talent that can crit 100% of the time first round, talk about 1 ap dagger of doom.

matrim you raise a good point about how situational Steel and Shadow can be. That's a big reason why it almost needs to be over the top good as your only going to benefit from it in surprise turns so it's worthless in scripted fights and chained encounters. Of course maybe if it was really potent, you'd get fewer chained encounters as you might not have to move into an area that would trigger additional opponents before current battle ended.

The problem of chained encounters is going to remain for any melee methinks.

Not sure how realistic this is but what about making SaS into a talent that builds over the whole game? Say every time you kill something with it in the surprise round it gives you a permanent stacking 1 damage boost (to SaS only of course). Risky to start off but once you are able to get those first 20ish kills then it can start to ramp up and turn Selen into a crazy round 1 killer. Keep the crit on it but maybe take off any starting bonus damage. Sorry, that one is outside of the capability of the Heroes' saved game format to support. Like the idea tho!

This has probably been suggested and I might be beating a dead horse here, but how about making Smiting Blow do holy damage instead of physical?

As mentioned above, I am very happy with the balance of the Talent and how it relates to other characters and making unique and interesting tactical choices without a group. When you've got Kyera as a striker, you'll do best reducing enemy armor.
