I'm running a Soldier/Hydra group through. I'm thinking of running Napalm Lance/Calling Shots/(Commander's ability that raises critical chance) to just mace my way out of situations.
Commander and Scout built for damage and mobility make up the front, and I have a soldier assigned to every Hyrda so they can combine OW and AoE Napalm abilities to devastating effect.
Engineers make perfect seconds to Hydras because the team can funnel a group or area of heavy Xeno activity through a choke point, the Hydra can lay down a field of Napalm and the Engineer can throw down a turret that can OW directly inside the fire to catch and stop anything that passes through in pursuit of the team.
I'm finding that Napalm makes Turrets exponentially better honestly... Turrets are a step or two behind the damage of a standard Soldier, and while they are very effective against Skitters, their damage against Hunters drops quickly. By forcing enemies to come through the Promethium, their lower damage attacks end up being more than enough to kill anything but Goliaths and the highest armor enemies like Carapaces if they get all three attacks off PLUS the damage from the fire.

Yup, En1gma, that's how I've built my team for this challenge. I will say that it is working great, the crit build up is pretty impressive (my hydras get a +15% from low level fire commander and low level calling shots plus an additional +15% from their napalm lance), and having turrets around to slow down the xeno works very well with large AoE hydra attacks. One point of contention, however. Early level sentries are pretty much just speed bumps, but I usually go whole hog on those suckers. At level 6+ and high engineering, sentries start to become killing machines. It's not unusual for me to switch my entire team away from overwatch on maps where I know the engineer can plop down 4 sentries as, well, extra overwatch is just not needed. Sitting a single scout with piercing fire behind a wall of 2/4 sentries makes a nearly impregnable strong point.

Should the Hydra team all get docked 1 point because they get Hydras for free in Galantia Cross? j/k

I swear its not on purpose ... my Hydra died against just before I cleared the Great Pipeline: Bombed.
That's 2 for 2. I wonder what will happen in Extermination by Fire?

Haha, admit it fallen, you have a chip on your shoulder when it comes to Hydras! You think we're disposable commodities.... ㅠㅠ

This Neptune's gun is big enough ... I am sure I could cram you Hydras into the chamber like a bullet and just blast a xeno with you ...

Regardless of whether team Hydra wins or not, I'm having a great time. I'm loving my Hydra team. This has definitely gotten me firmly back in the "Hydra" camp, even though before I thought Neptunes were probably superior in BF. We just pulled in 3 more in Artifact Vaults. Seriously with the amount of promethium we're using I wonder why we even need to plant a bomb. This place has to be ready to melt into the ground already. And fallen, that is impressive. How did you get those fatass Neptunes to move so fast? You only took 50% more turns than my Hydras!

Just finished Extermination by Fire. And because today is the start of spring break, I plan on bringing my group up through Rychart Prime: Patrol Route. I have 5 Neptune Troopers trained up and waiting for deployment!

Detonation site just made me sweat big-time. I discovered the nasty surprise that you can't swap out your starting soldiers. I had big dreams of going all Hydras except for Cap and Engineer. Then I got some really nasty spawns with bad roles and decided I better bring in my Pally to heal everyone one up. In the end that was probably good as Dalan had been low on HP and ended up having to tank a Goliath that spawned next to him. With Inferno Shield and level 7 armor though, he only took 30 something damage. Might have just eked it out. In the end we only got 2 Hydras in.

You just swap in 2 Hydras and run them in different directions. I'm running a Scout + Neptune squad, so the scouts are a whirlwind around the steady moving Neptunes (move & fire, baby). My Neptunes are usually about 220 Heat by the end of every level, but they sure as hell got it done. I think I need to train more Neptunes, clearly 2 will not be enough EDIT: definitely agree, the challenge is a ton of fun. It has made me very impressed with the power of dual Neptunes, they just shrrrrreedddd everything. Can't wait to see 3 or 6 together
