I use 150-200% level warrior, then for every 2 points in pilot (starting from 30) I put a point in Tactics and Intimidate. It's good enough with a huge Medium/Medium ship, lots of crew, weapons and Leviathan. Beating alien ships quite easily.

Wow! Thanks for all your replies! I tried a gunner though in demanding but I encountered aliens higher than my level and we can't seem to damage one another by 10km to 1km range only through boarding but I got killed eventually
Can't wait for ST 2!!

Pilot doesn't seem to do good in ignoring vessels in encounters, this is something that stealth does?

So it's still possible to build a gunner/boarder hybrid if you don't plan on ignoring all encounters in deep space. Thanks a lot!

It is possible, but AFAIK it's one of the hardest military builds to put to work. You won't have an optimal build for either of these, meaning that a well built gun bunny or a well built boarder should beat you with no problem. Edit: As for my pilot percentage on my Alien hunter captain... It used to be something around 70% pilot in the sub 6 version. But now that the strength has been counted to the level as well... It's actually way less. But since I am an alien hunter, it doesn't bother me, because not too many alien ships are equipped with torpedoes.

poryg yeah, but just thinking that boarding also needs tactics meaning you should have a good amount of skill for using guns. Or does tactics need to be left on a certain level and continue building warrior and str for those boarder types?

Tactics are fairly unnecessary for boarding. They are rather needed for retreating from boarding range. Useful for board/gun hybrids, useless for boarders. My sub 6.0 alien hunters looked like this (I love showing it on sub 6.0, because it's nicely visible): Strength 300% captain level Warrior 200% captain level Pilot 1 point every level, starting from 30 Tactics 1 point every 2 levels, starting from 30 Intimidate 1 point every 2 levels, starting from 30. Lost crew was no issue. Ship damage was no issue. The reason why was because I capitalized on weapons and Leviathan upgrade giving me a huge warrior bonus during boarding. I had to fix this ratio when the strength became counted into the level equation. Strength equal to warrior, warrior equal to 150-200% of my level (although the 200% is really extreme). But still, even though my tactics, intimidate and pilot took a hit, I am still able to capitalize on the Leviathan even on the impossible difficulty.

Good one! So what do you do with those encounters from different factions or Independents? Do you simply board everyone you encounter aside from the faction of your choosing?

I acknowledge everyone. Every faction is my friend. When I can't acknowledge, I surrender to pirates where I have trade permits. I ignore the rest if they are peaceful. I kill only hostile ships. I am an alien hunter, so non-alien ships are irrelevant to me. Boarding is fairly expensive anyway and fighting enemies for one xp doesn't really bring that much.
