So it's still possible to build a gunner/boarder hybrid if you don't plan on ignoring all encounters in deep space. Thanks a lot! If you ever get a gun/board hybrid to work well enough to the point that it is viable on hard difficulties, please post how. I've tried and failed so many times...

It really is impossible, or maybe I haven't found the best combination of upgrades, officers and build yet.

Or, does professions play a huge role in builds with their hidden bonuses? As far as I know, no profession has bonuses that directly effect combat actions.

Are there upgrades or officers that soak HP damage to captains The Bodyguard officer will soak HP damage to your captain. Having high crew also soaks HP damage.

Thanks! poryg - I kept getting killed in duels, I just can't figure out the best combination of officers resistor, in impossible difficulty the logic for creating a gun/boarder hybrid is pretty messed up. There's too much skill where you need to allocate xp. What's your most successful hybrid captain

What's your most successful hybrid captain From my Gun/Board Hybrid thread: Another attempt; another death. This time I died at level 30 (a new record for my gun/board hybrids). My skills were: Pilot 41, Tactics 39, Stealth 8, Warrior 17, Intimidate 30. Strength was 2x my level. I changed build plans often mid-game, and when I died I was aiming for higher Pilot/Tactics. My ship was an Admiral Battlecruiser with the following upgrades: Battle Prow, Plasma Cutters, Bridge, W-F Recycling Plant, and Hyperion. I had 50 weapons. Officers were Templar, Pilot, and Military. I died duelling a level 60 pirate captain. I was down to less than 30 crew before the battle, and I couldn't seem to hit him with guns, so I had no choice but to board (or surrender... or ram... I chose poorly). If anyone's wandering why I keep posting these, it's more of a journal for me to keep track of what I've tried so far, but I also hope it could help someone trying a similar build know what doesn't work, or someone might give me advice on what might work.

If you screw up in duels, you have either a bad captain build or a bad ship.
