I actually had in mind bards from Etrian Odyssey, a delightful old school rpg. Bards in that game we're group buff focused augmenting party attributes. Extra defense, HP, lacing weapons with elemental damage, etc. Very powerful but tricky to use as they had limited individual offense.
Others pointed out good uses of bards from other games. Not all rpgs use them effectively to sure. An issue I doubt will not be a problem for the Trese brothers. 😉

Turn/calm animal would be nice, and the game badly needs someone who can use Earth magic. It also needs someone who can use Ice magic, just saying Lol, I will keep my fingers crossed that the Patreon crew can get us over the $500 goal mark and I get an excuse to sink in the hundred hours to add a new character! Which item in Patreon need to get to $500?

Lol, I will keep my fingers crossed that the Patreon crew can get us over the $500 goal mark and I get an excuse to sink in the hundred hours to add a new character! Which item in Patreon need to get to $500? richard - we've decided to put some exciting goals on Patreon milestones. If we reach a $500 / month goal, then we will do a "Major Add or Upgrade" of Patreon choice. I've cut and pasted the offer below. We really appreciate all the Patreons who are helping us stay in business every month so we can keep making games! $342 of $500 per month Major Add or Upgrade - Patreon's Choice Once we reach this milestone, we will ask our Patreons (at any pledge level) to vote to pick (1) which game should receive the reward and then whether we (2) should we add something new or upgrade something existing and finally to (3) identify the exact new addition or upgrade.
Examples of new additions include adding a 9th hero to Heroes of Steel (on which Patreons would vote for which slot - warrior, mage, healer, sneak as well as their abilities) OR a 9th class for Templar Battleforce (again, picking from among the Assassin, Valkyrie, Pyro-Engineer, Bio-Engineer, and other options) OR adding a new Cyber Knight avatar.
Examples of upgrade include re-drawing the first two Cyber Knight avatars, rebuilding the Heroes tileset to make the world more beautiful, or re-imagining all of the Star Traders officers in the highest quality. I've been improving my art for years now, and would be very excited to re-do a major system within an existing game, or tackle a big add to a game like Heroes.
Thanks to all of our Patreons who are helping us hit these goals and develop new or upgraded content!

Bard: Bard's make me want to jam two fingers down my throat and puke in game developers laps. I always think of them mincing around taverns with lousy combat skills. That has been my experience with other games. I'm sure you guys can do better than that. I wasn't impressed with the Never Winter Nights implementation, and several other big video game houses. Why do I feel like Balgair wrote this, and he's just jealous of bards because they're handsome, can sing while fighting, and could probably drink him under the table... In all seriousness though, bards are a bit over used in this genre, so I agree in that sense Tis True he was probably was in his cups when he spouted off on yet another drunken rant. Balgair did mention what he lacks in good looks there is more than enough gold to compensate. "Bards sing for their suppers" rumpf!

Turn/calm animal would be nice, and the game badly needs someone who can use Earth magic. It also needs someone who can use Ice magic, just saying I think you hit the nail on the head. That would be terrific especially the earth magic. I wonder what would happen if he encountered something similar to the cursed White wolf quest in HoS, while in the shape of a wolf in Legends of Steel.

I've decided on druid. Shapeshifting is the bee's knees(bet you haven't heard that phrase in a while lol) when it comes to rpgs.
Also, I've always had trouble coming up with earth spells in my own games. Maybe it's because I see it as a wide element encompassing the ground itself and plant life; just too many possible spells for me to come up with. So I'll let you do the hard work for me lol.
In all seriousness, I feel that earth and nature magic are very similar, and since druids are all about nature it fits perfectly. Healing, debuffs, attack spells, I'm getting all giddy thinking about it. Just don't make the same mistake as baldur's gate, and flip the druid rules pertaining to weapons and armor. Or better yet, make the druid have a disdain towards all metal equipment lol

I really liked the Baldur's gate trick of making armour for druids out of the shells of really big insects, though.

... Or better yet, make the druid have a disdain towards all metal equipment lol But they are heroes of -steel-... Now the pedantic answer... Metals are natural. Ore require no tech beyond digging. Smelting requires very high heat, so playing with fire, a very ancient tech. Alloys require two or more smelted metals or compounds. Steel is just smelted iron ore plus a little carbon - not exactly high tech. But... Many metals are toxic to life, either outright (any amount e.g. lead in humans) or via excess (e.g. zinc, humans again). Bacteria not having differentiated tissues and much in the way of three dimensional mass, are typically very prone to surface contact death or debilitation from metals. ~10% of the mass of, and ~5x the cells of an animal is their baterial colonies. These colonies have a massive influence on the health of said animal, including humans. If for example a person lacks what are known as predatory bacteria (bacteria that eat other bacteria), that can lead to chronic infection by colony overgrowth... Sometimes the only symptom is unaccounted for fragility of the animal, sometimes death. These variations can drastically affect the sense of well being of an animal beyond the obvious (if they are ever looked for that is) symptoms. If then a nature loving individual or group notices a sense of robustness and personal calm, and group peace engendered by that personal calm group wide, by being immersed in life rich lands not excessively burned (fire , cut down (by metals for example and disinfected (a brutish violence toward the 'insignifigant' life), then why shouldn't they avoid those things which done in excess causes ruin of that sense of robust life, personal calm and group peace..? Of course life itself is regarded as mystical, spiritual, miraculous, mysterious or at the very least, immensely dynamic, full of some very embodied innate knowledge tested by many millennia and its loss is a loss of its embodied knowledge and dynamism. - (Though, allowing infinities or even just extremely large number sets, even lost improbable knowledge can redevelop in due time [or place ].) ps Don't judge my messy punctuation, I'm no grammarian. :-p

Great thread and thanks for all the votes -- fascinating to see how the Druid and Monk ran away with the cake.

Monk. I want a wise shaved head unarmed badass. Walk softly with skilled fists and feet. Deep knowledge and reverence for both nature and the spirits. Knowledge of lesser spirits too. Not just the big gods.

What we really need is a witch. If Cory Trese and fallen are talking about a crafting system, the witch can be for crafting potions. I also feel like a witch would be a master at curses: as in no attacks(except basic weapon), only curses.

amongstshadows - I like the idea of a witch! I was just doing some RPGing over the weekend, and one of the characters was the son-of-a-witch, was a really interesting setup.
