I was mostly just attempting humor with the digs about Digging. I do think they're pretty funny though. Javat = Hobbits = Jabbits = Rabbits. It all equals lots of digging somehow.

contributor : Your Reputation score with Javat is pretty low, isn't it? fallen : Blockquoting the proverb does work. Edits made for both Javat and De Valtos. "If you can never DIG you cannot truly live." I double-checked and the original version, the one I modified, did say "die" and not "dig." I do understand it was a mistake; I just wanted to point out that it was a mistake I reproduced, not introduced.

I won't have time to rewrite/copyedit all the Factions, but I can at least add a proverb for each, so that all the Faction pages will look the same (motto in bold, then blockquoted proverb, then body text).
Any proverb suggestions?

I guess I'd be banned from editing the Steel Song wiki page. I couldn't promise to be purely objective. Then again, I'd only be stating fact if I mentioned Steel Song ships were made out of cardboard (and clingwrap), their torpedoes were really just teapots, and they were descendants of Ratkin.
Oh ... and they are very squishy when shot at ...

To be clear, Faction proverbs are sayings from one Faction expressing its wisdom. So, not just stuff that someone from one Faction might say, and not stuff someone might say about another Faction.

It would be nice to standardize the presentation of the Factions in the Wiki, on the model of the pages for Javat and De Valtos. So for now, we need the following: ● motto ● sample proverb ● short description of the Faction ● short description of a typical (or an archetypal) member of the Faction We should add some stuff later, such as how the Faction sees, and is seen by, each other Faction; but for the moment, let's focus on choosing the best possible motto and sample proverb. A motto is both how a Faction likes to see itself and how it chooses to present itself to the outside (mostly the other Factions). Each Faction can have only one motto, just as it can have only one blazon. A proverb expresses the wisdom of a Faction: what members of this Faction say to its younger members. There are many possible proverbs; we should choose a particularly representative one. My favorite motto, among the ones currently listed, is Thulun's: "Nobility is earned." It can be seen in two lights: ● "We've earned our nobility." (a message to the outside) ● "Who is born a noble has a duty to excel." (a message to itself, reminiscent of the French noblesse oblige) Another good one, in my option, is Cadar's "Through strength, peace" -- it shows how this Faction wants to see (and/or wants other people to see) its military might: not as an instrument of war and destruction, but of peace and stability. To mention the two pages I've already edited, I like the Javat motto (Check before you dig); I'm less sure about the De Valtos motto (Prices are negotiable). Is that how De Valtos, not is, but chooses to present itself? (Honest question, as I don't have the background knowledge of people who've played ST1.) Another, similar option would be "Everything has a price" (meaning two things: one, that everything is for sale, even when it's supposedly not; two, that if you want something, you must be willing to pay the price -- a meaning that fits De Valtos's high expectations and standard of living). For Zenrin, which motto fits better: " We are all memories" or " We survived through worse"? For Javat, which proverb is more representative: " Look at the stars, but keep your feet in the dirt" or " If you can't build it yourself, then you don't really need it"?

Personally, I don't think either of those sayings are fitting. The former seems to suggests there is something wrong with leaving a planet and becoming a spacer. The latter just doesn't make sense as practical wisdom, as one person in an advanced society can't simply build everything (s)he needs himself/herself.

I think those are metaphorical feet. Or maybe the head is metaphorical. The body however must be real, it's just very stretchy.

"Keep your head in the stars and your feet in the dirt"? Moklumnue: Only a fool settles! I'm not sure what the message is here, but it sounds ... inflexible ... which is weird for a Faction known for its diplomatic skills.

That may be an internal on.
Moklumue would probably want to remind the galaxy that their trade network is everywhere and you'd do best to just plug into it and profit.

Something like "For the profit of all", then. I'll think more about it.
(Actually ... I do like "For the profit of all" as a motto for Moklumnue.)
"Knowledge is power" would make a fine motto for Richart.

In my opinion, that sounds too... benevolent... suspiciously benevolent. I believe one priority in rethinking the mottos of De Valtos and Mok is to make sure they don't sound interchangeable, so they don't seem too similar. For an example of two superficially similar factions having unique mottos that express their true individuality, look at the mottos of SSC and Cadar. The mottos of SSC and Cadar both explain why they are so militarized, but at the same time the mottos are antithetical to each other. De Valtos seems to me like they are more capitalistic. Moklumnue, by contrast, seems more mercantilistic. Maybe something like "Become more than what you are" for De Valtos, and "Commerce is a weapon" for Moklumnue mottos?

"Commerce is a weapon" sounds like Mok wants to use commerce against other Factions. It may be true, and the other Factions are indeed leery of letting Mok regain the commercial prominence it once had, but I don't think Mok wants to fuel those fears. "Become more than what you are" -- It sounds like a recruitment ad more than a motto, in my opinion, but I'd be curious to hear what other people think about it. Commerce (according to the Merriam-Webster's 11th Collegiate Dictionary): 1. Social intercourse : interchange of ideas, opinions, or sentiments 2. The exchange or buying and selling of commodities on a large scale involving transportation from place to place I see Mok as being interested in both aspects of commerce (so commerce in its wider acceptation, including diplomacy), and De Valtos as being more focused on the second. The fact that the Mediator trait is common among Mok crew members (from what I saw) seems to support this view. Also ... www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJa0Zv5gHSU
