1) Remove [Contracts] and [Rumours] tabs from the [Faction] menu (they can be found in [Captain] and [Cargo] anyway - does my head in having to click through those to get to Faction Conflicts!) I have no idea what you mean.

Ahh ... Alienfodder is referring to the icon in the top right-hand side of the Faction Politics screen (and contracts, rumors, and conflicts screens too) that allows you to flip between the following screens:
Politics --> Contracts --> Rumors --> Conflicts --> back to Faction Politics.
This is an extremely useful shortcut that saves you from having to look at one thing in detail (eg Faction Politics), then click back, then go to say Cargo, then Rumors, then Back, then Conflicts).
It's even more useful because in deep space, you can press the phone menu button and then go straight into Contracts or Rumors, then navigate to Conflicts or Faction Politics with one or two additional button presses.
So no, this should not be removed.

Hmm, you're right. I hadn't really used the sequence in that way. I'm always having to play politics for which the only two screens of interest are Faction standings & Faction Conflicts. I suppose the only fix would be a major redesign which is a lot to ask for.

See, I spend most of my time in rumors and conflicts. I have a good understanding of my actions that cause me to be +RP or -RP with factions so don't really look there. Once I have strong +RP or strong -RP with a faction, it's even more of a reason why I wouldn't need to look at the politics screen. I mean, if you've got +2000 RP with a faction, you don't have to keep peeking to see that they still like you. You might do something that will cause you to lose a rank, or a trade permit but you get toasts for those kind of things and otherwise they don't disappear without any warning.
Similarly contracts are pretty much a constant - you can check what you have to do and then the only thing you need to worry about is when the contract will expire.
Rumors on the other hand is something that changes without warning. First, when you go to a large planet, instead of reading rumors one at a time when go to a spicehall, it's easier to just hit the next rumor button until there are none left. Then you go and check out the rumors at your leisure.
Before you decide to go tackle a rumor, you check the conflicts to make sure the shortage you want to fulfil isn't on a trade-embargoed faction. Otherwise your -RP will be significant.
And of course .. conflicts themselves change on a very regular basis so you should check those regularly.
The great thing is ... both rumors and conflicts are on the same screen ... Cargo. You can flip between them with two button presses (or less).

I have been using the Cargo screen for Rumours & Conflicts more since I've been sacrificing Merchant captains on demanding. As you say, the layout is good for later in the game, but when I start doing contracts I am going to be mainly checking standings & conflicts, especially after ones that were operatives in disguise. I still believe the UI is imperfect.

I think having a Military Officer captain role and a Military Officer OFFICER is confusing when trying to type and talk about it. I would like to change the name of one. Maybe make the Military Officer Captain role be renamed to Commander or Military Leader. OR Rename the Military Officer crew to Mercenary or Commando or some other appropriate yet distinct name. And that's my two cents for today!

About the interface, I basically dislike one thing: Going to most of the useful screens takes 2 to 3 clicks. And I check all of them too often. I would love to see TWO rows of buttons at the bottom of the main star map, which would take me immediately to:
| Officer advice | Ship | Conflicts | Contracts | Rumors | | Map | Bridge | Wild | Urban | Start |
And under menu button: • «Choose in settings from the rest of the options??? Or did I miss anything important?» • Faction • Captain • Cargo • Center • More V
I would happily sacrifice a bit of main star map to get all those buttons there. There may be small icons or acronyms on them if it would be hard to squeeze all these buttons in there.

We call that proposal three and it also has some other possible options like the use of sliding drawers and so forth.
There are many challenges with screen real estate.
I suspect you are speaking about your own play style primarily and judging from your description of 3, you play in Portrait mode.

This is my style, my pain, and of course, my portrait mode HTC Desire hold by one hand when commuting to work. It is the way how I would change it (as is in the thread name).

That's a good idea. I actually favor calling the officer something different, to preserve the documentation, Google searches and hits we get from "Star Trader Military Officer Guide" which is a common search term for us.
Great suggestion tho, added to the list

Also -- I am now working on a project I am calling "Advanced HUDs" where the play will be able to pick from a predefined list of HUDs that include different buttons and take up more or less space.
This should give you most of what you asked for Fenikso, and be able to mostly satisfy the hundreds of other, alternate configurations that have been e-mailed, both with more and less buttons.

If I count all the features with "coming soon" feel, it sounds like real Christmas . Even if it is probably coming few months later.
