The description for the Conjuring Skill includes;
"Burning Blades, Choking Ash, Meteoric Shockwave and Pureflame Shield. Each Conjuring point lets me hit an additional target in Areas of Effect."
Immolation 1 is a cross shaped AOE. However at Immolation 4 it becomes a 3x3 hex block shaped AOE. I'm thinking this would require a Conjuring value of 9 to hit every hex in Immolation 4.
Immolation is mentioned under the Sorcery Skill, as increasing my spell attack accuracy.
So I'm wondering why the description for Conjuring Skill does not include Immolation?
A side question: If I understand the Burning Blades Talent description correctly. I thought I read a post saying the damage from Burning Blades is applied to fire based AOE, so will this work for Immolation as well?

My assumption was that sorcery actually increases Immolation, but conjuring increases how many it can hit. Basically you have to take two skills to make it work. I was thinking I would just skip immolation for that reason and focus on the conjuration skills.
Seems the same problem the rogue has, you have a lot of skills that need points and are pretty limited in what you receive.
I could be totally wrong here though.

My guess is : sorcery increases accuracy and conjuring the number of target(s) you can hit. So, IMO, with a conjuring of 1 and the talent (immolation) of 4 you COULD hit 9 targets in the AoE but your skill only grants you 1...only my thought so I can be completely wrong here.

I was thinking the same thing as Beuns. But, I just got Immolation 1 with a Sorcery of 8 and Conjuring of 3. I've tried it about 4 times, and missed every time. Which doesn't seem to support that theory.

1) Sorcery (skill) and Knowledge (attribute) will increase the accuracy of a spell like Immolation. 2) Sorcery is the skill that backs Immolation, so it is used to count the maximum number of targets that are hit. Sorcery 4 = up to 4 enemies could take damage. 3) If the original target is missed by the accuracy roll, then the spell is a 100% miss. If the original target is hit, all other targets counted (for example, 3 extra) and then you get 3 additional accuracy rolls to see if those targets are hit.
We will work making sure this is clearer in the leveling screens and the upcoming updates to the talent details screen.
@johnrobison - Burning / Thundering Blades damage is applied to absolutely any attack, including AoE.

One thing I'd noticed for choking ash: At level 1, it only hits one guy. Lvl 2, hits 2, as long as they are within a cross-shaped layout. Same with Lvl 3. One problem/drawback, fallen / Cory Trese , is that you cannot cast it on an empty tile to hit two guys in the + shape if there is no one in the middle IE: 0X0 00X 000 If you cast directly on either enemy, you only get 1. and since the + shape would allow you to get both if you cast in that middle area.. but spell won't allow that as valid targeting.

Alex Fury - all combat, cursing, and buffing magic requires a living target at the center of the casting.

fallen - I've noticed that. But kind of nerfs some of the AoE spells that have the + shape, when you can't get 2 enemies because they're diagonal to each other.

Alex FuryHi Some Talent (spells), will take on different and larger shapes if you invest more points in them. For example in Karjtan's Talent Table of Flame and Fortune Take a look at Firestorm 1. This is described as a 5x5 hex cross shaped cloud. What this means is there is a cross in the center with a "cloud" of hexes around it. Burning Blades will transition from a single target to a cross and then a 3x3 hex block shape. Some never change such as Choking Ash which starts as a cross shaped AOE and stays that way. You can find similar examples in Vincent's Talent Table of Shock ThreapyDuring play I try to get my party positioned in a "choke point", to bring the monsters in close, and make them bunch up so that the cross shaped AOE has a better chance of hitting more than one of them. Sometimes there is nothing you can do. But the value a spell like Choking Dust has on monsters is worth the cost of hitting them one at a time if necessary. I find Karjtan seldom runs short of SP, but then I currently have only played on Normal difficulty, and make fairly frequent trips back to a campsite so everyone can buff up again.

Does Knowledge increase the accuracy of single target attack spells or AOE only? I'm wondering about Conjuration and AOE curses. In the above 1) through 3). Could I substitute the word Conjuring for Sorcery, and Choking Ash for Immolation and use the same calculations ?

John Robinson - Knowledge increases the accuracy of any "Attack Spell" - AoE or not. No, only (2) applies to curses, as curses "auto-hit" their target at this time.

fallen - I guess my problem with it is a history of D&D and similar type games where an AoE targets where you put it, not relying on an enemy to be there (like fireball, or wall of fire/ice/etc, Stinking Cloud), so that you can hit an area, or even pre-hit an area if you know enemies will be there (a-la stinking cloud). Making all AoE's reliant upon a char/npc as target can be pretty hindering at times.

Lots of balancing factors, especially when you get into AoE buffs with shorter durations. Game is so deep, player has to swim out
