captain nemoHi Nemo. I looked at some of the Distant World reviews. Looks like a cross between, Master of Orion, and Sim City. Massive number of options, and sandboxing. You can configure how much control you want, over the whole game - manage your empire, or leave it in the hands of the AI, while you go off and explore the universe. Sounds interesting. It will also play on my old PC. I think I'll give it a go, myself.

I'm currently giving another shot at inFamous 2. Haven't played it for 2 years because other games caught me but : it's really great.

I've researched the web over. Tried over 8 different 'fixes' to no avail. I'll keep trying different things as I have time. Very sad these games are so buggy. Lately I feel like I'm whining. Ugh. No more. rabid

rabidbite. No. It's not whining. It's REALLY disappointing and frustrating, to get a new game, you've got all fired up about, and it won't work. Especially after countless attempts to get it running.

Hi captain nemo. WHAT!!! Way, way, way, too expensive and over-priced on Steam. Steam wants nearly £50, for Universe. Matrix Games, have it for £25+tax, for the BOXED SET, which also INCLUDES a FREE downloadable version. Just over £19+tax, for the download version only. Steam may be easier for updates and the Matrix Games purchase, is version 1.0, but aren't patches normally free? I'll leave you a link. Hopefully it translates to a decent saving.

I've been fiddling with the idea of joining EVE Online. What keeps me away is the cutthroat player base and the steep learning curve.

Elite: Dangerous? As in David Braben, Ian Bell, Elite?

Can't count the number of hours I lost to Elite. Stunning game. I still have my keyboard overlay with the boxed C64 version - on disc no less.
I played Elite 2 (Frontier?) but found the ship too cumbersome to control, with it's more realistic style of handling.
I have an Xbox indie game called Odyssey 3011, which is basically enhanced Elite. The guy who made it even has you starting in a Cobra Mk III, and the police fly Vipers that look just the same, but filled 3D instead of vector graphics obviously.
I also have Dark Star One, which has many Elite similarities which I'm playing at the moment (Mass Effect put me onto a sci-fi binge). I'm really enjoying that.
But nothing comes close to X3 for me. The scale, the scope, the details... It gets so involved too, ultimately being able to run your own stations in space that sell goods, and set up defences for them so they'll be protected and earn you a profit while you're out doing other things a thousand light years away.

Hi mataeus. Yep. I remember sitting up at night, with the lights off, playing the original Elite for zx Spectrum. Pew. Pew. Pew. I spent WEEKS playing that game, listening to the tape loading. Hoping it wouldn't crash back to the ZX Loading Screen, so I could get in my Cobra MK III. No. I know what you mean. Frontier was not as good. The BLUE space colour didn't help either. The uninhabited planet landings were waaayyyy too hit and miss. Annndddd. Even with 100+ shield generators on a Panther Clipper, an Imperial Courier, with a (200mw? White laser beam), could turn you to space dust, in seconds. Yes. I think we talked about X3 before. I'm still playing Xtended Terran Conflict, at the moment. Seriously thinking of playing X2 again. Not as pretty, but in some ways, more immersive. The only thing that spoils XTC for me, is the lack of inter-faction fighting, and the way pirates can attack you, and no-one batts an eyelid, but if YOU attack someone....

I enjoyed XTC, mainly for all the extra systems you get to explore. That, and I could be a space taxi for a career!

Elite: Dangerous, is a multiplayer, real-time, on-line, gaming environment, with BILLIONS of star systems to explore. It's in Beta at present. X, (named after the X-Universe), is a complex, realtime, 3D, 4x style game, which is single-player. You can play the main storyline, or choose a Sandbox character. Quite a steep learning curve, but you can take your time, and branch out, as you become more acclimatised. The controls are not the best, in the gaming world, (slight understatement), but it is SCRIPT based, with LOTS of community mods and add-ons.

Elite: Dangerous. Looks a bit "Steam Punk", dunnit! Must be the BRASS colour, and what looks like CHUNKY plate metal and RIVETS.
