You're a lame Star Trader if you defeat an Independent ship in battle and leave it un-scrapped Shalun hears the cries of the innocent.

You're a lame Star Trader if you defeat an Independent ship in battle and leave it un-scrapped Shalun hears the cries of the innocent. Are you saying there is some sort of hidden penalty, other than a vague sense of shame, for destroying honest hard-working independent spacers?

There is a minor cost of earplugs for you and the crew - helps with the incessant babble of the Political Officer and First Mate too.
Oh ... and there is a chance of morale hit for every action against Independents. First Mate helps you reduce this risk.

Pirates do not incur a morale hit for attacking Independents.

If you go out hunting pirates, and end up getting looted! Add something that makes for a lame star trader here! You start a new game, and run a few missions with your chosen allies, only to realize that one or more factions have allied with Steel Song... accidentally making you allies with the DEBIL!!! ... Yeah... I deleted that captain out of pure shame!

You're a lame Star Trader if you surrender and get executed, rather than die fighting!

You're a lame star trader if you get a contract to a planet's palace, but spend so long going around the rest of the quadrant that by the time you get there the prince has gone into hiding! (It's also EXTREMELY annoying!! )

I'm so mad at my lameness! ~Edit: Looking back I think i may have deserved this little smidgen of Karma... Capt. Grape Smuggler was Javat...Thats what I get for not rolling a Cadar!~

... you try to attack a ship confronting you, and you hit the surrender button. Twice. In a row.

You hear of a shortage of a good you have stockpiled. You race to your cache in triumph. When you get there no goods of that sort are to be found. "Ah...", you say, mustering as much philosophical detatchment as you can, "they were in the other cache."

You arrive at the site of a bounty contract. You collect Intel on your target before moving in. You hide in the docking bay as your target lands his armed to the teeth Obliterator Cruiser. You attack as he takes of in his shuttle. The superior pilot precedes to gut you fish.
You are a lame startrader if you watch the ship instead of the captain.

Your captain dies as a result of repeated mutinies, due to failure to stock up on water fuel.
An embarrassing number of my early captains died because of this.
