You are a lame star trader if, early in the game, you find and defeat a very strong replacement to your first ship. Feeling very pleased with yourself for having defeated a superior foe, you go about transferring cargo to your new ship. Between the two ships you've got a bunch of artifacts, weapons, electronics--will be nice to get the reputation bonuses for those.
You really did it this time Captain! Well done!
Having installed the Water-Fuel Tank upgrade on your old ship makes achieving the perfect balance between Water-Fuel and more valuable cargo on your new ship a bit tricky. After careful consideration you achieve that balance. This is awesome! Then, while moving out of the cargo screen to claim your new ship... you hit the back button one time too many.

You're a lame Star Trader if you actually head for the radiation storm once you've gotten the rumor.

Haha ... you're also a lame star trader if you are victorious in a battle against a vastly superior ship. You decide, in your great wisdom that you want ... no you NEED this ship, even though your old ship is okay and the new ship has more holes than the plot of a b-grade scifi movie.
You diligently transfer cargo, but not paying attention, you instruct your crew shift the cargo from the one you've beaten to your old ship.
You press "Take Ship", and the new, slightly used and badly damaged ship is YOURS!
Excitedly you start towards your nearest friendly planet, 16AU away, before noticing you have zero fuel. You struggle to get to port, but after the 3rd mutiny, your crew decide you are surplus to requirements and you are summarily executed.

You're a lame star trader if you fly to a rumor that is 26 AU away to get an officer you already have.

You're a lame Space Trader if you bring a tiny hold to a months-long blockade, only to expire the blockade contract while buying more water on the blockaded planet, and wind up losing your rep with Cadar.

You're a lame star trader if you haven't gone and blown up a dozen Steel Song ships recently. Go on - I know you want to ...

You're a lame Star Trader if you chose a faction other than Independent before engaging in piracy against everyone: now you can't access any Military Docks to repair guns and armour!

Darth Cthoras you can go to military bases in independent star docks. There, you can buy guns, armor, and torpedoes. The quality of said guns, armor and torpedoes are pretty suspect, especially with the brand names being written in crayon, but you can still source the parts there.

You're right - it's military upgrades they get locked out of. Guess I'm the lame Star Trader of the evening =(

Being Independent feels nice though, because you are Independent. Independents don't honor rank or Edict, so you don't need to feel bad attacking any ship, even independent.

Yeah, but being independent means you are truly alone. Independent colonies don't care. Even if they did care, they can't do anything because if factions are the cookies in the cookie jar, independent colonies are the crumbs at the bottom of the jar, and you, dear independent captain, are half-melted grain of sugar that is stuck on the side of one of those crumbs. When all the cookies are gone, the independents will all get tossed in the bin to make way for the next round of factional cookies. Gotta love Quadrant politics You know you're a lame star trader when you're defending the cookies of the galaxy!

You know you're a lame Star Trader when your crew mutinies because numerous ships in a row blocked your Urban attempt, denying you precious water and using up all your stockpile.
You're also a lame Star Trader when you notice a surge in star dock development and rush to it....only to discover the planet's star dock is denied due to your -741 rep with that faction. Screw you, Javat.

You are a lame star trader if you have to capture your target, but after reducing the engines to zero you click on Salvage button.
