So I've played through a handful of games significantly so far...
With a crew of 40, following several encounters/fights, returned to a planet, paid everyone, and was notified that 10 crew were able to learn new skills; I actually groaned a bit (not good). I was upgrading talents/skills so often that I was just quickly scanning through each skill, and seeing which skill had the least number of people trained in it, then selecting it without thinking of building that crew person's 'personality'. It was a bit monotonous/tedious, especially on mobile. I couldn't imagine a crew of 100, designed to constantly attack Xeno or other vessels, and constantly adjusting skills.
I understand that the skills tree isn't complete (and will probably ever grow! ), but for the sake of simplicity, let's say we have fighting skills and job skills (including buffs, etc..) and the current number of skills (crew likely to not be the only one to learn a particular skill by level 2 or 3)
I also understand that some games will have smaller crews, and the game will play similarly to BF <- I felt it! and love the mechanism... The way I play my game, I do care about Officers and the Patrol Pool, want to take care of who has what, but really don't care about the remainder (other than the fact that they are getting better at their job)
So, with that in mind, with my current crew of 40, it would be nice if OPTIONALLY:
I know I'm oversimplifying a lot of things (esp at first alpha), but trying to imagine how to not have to manually upgrade 10 or 20 snot-nosed crewman every time I make landfall and pay them. (They probably won't last through the next attack anyways...).
Also realize my idea above would change a game mechanism (probably would have to make 'promotion' to Patrol Pool a one-way ticket)
I'd love to hear other ideas to improve/streamline the upgrade process, hope this sparks a good discussion.

PS. From the StarTraders2: Character Creation video regarding the Manually Assign Talents (advanced) button: "means you are going to have to go through and manually assign talents for your 30-odd crew at the beginning of the game, I would NOT check that button, and it may eventually be removed. Right now the game is going to make a lot of good decisions for you..." <- Yah! What he said!

So, with that in mind, with my current crew of 40, it would be nice if OPTIONALLY:
- General Crew could OPTIONALLY auto-learn skills on the skill tree, automatically filling in job skills (not fighting skills)
- Putting someone into the Patrol Pool would allow 'respec' of skills, aimed more at boarding, searching, fighting (Yay! Free Re-Training and more pay when you join the pool!)
- SIMILAR to when creating a new game template, the 'Manually Assign Talents' checkbox, it would not just be for the starting game but would continue throughout. Or there could be 'auto-assign all talents' button on an upgrade summary screen
